AUSTRALIAN TEAM BEATEN
EXCITING MATCH AT HAMILTON (I'EKsb tssociATioa TiLiaaiu.) HAMILTON, August 18. In an entertaining contest, providing sparkling forward play, Waikato beat the Australian hockey team at Hamilton to-day by 3 goals to 2. The tourists were obviously affected by their recent travelling, and had not recovered their best form. Individually, however," they were sound, and when mere practised, will fully extend New Zealand teams. The forwards were smart, and the halves very sound, with Cullen outstanding by virtue of his' accurate and clean fielding and hard hitting on defence. Lee, the captain, as centre half, was a good connecting pivot, but was a sick man. For the greater part of the game he could not be sesn at his best. If nothing else, however, it proved his gameness. Stening, Allen, and Milner were fast inside forwards, while Leggett made some pretty sallies along the outside. Elliott was a better back, while the goalkeeper, Reid, did some sound defence. However, he was overshadowed by his vis-a-vis, Smillie. Waikato has claims for All Black honours in Forster, the wing, who was outstanding, and played a brilliant attacking game, unequalled on the day. Roughton and Spiers were two snappy inside forwards. The teams were:— Australia—Reid, Rothwell, Elliott, Irvine, Lee, Cullen, Milner, Allen, Stening, Leggett, and Tester. Waikato—Smillie, Pountney, Ewan, Brough, Radcliffe, Storry, Forster, Lawry, Roughton, Spiers, and Powdrill. Waikato's three inside forwards made a lightning dash to the Australian circle. Lawry, Roughton, and Spiers handled for the latter to beat Reid with a fast ground shot from well out. Forster made great dashes along the outside, and raised the enthusiasm of the crowd. Lawry skied his centre for Roughton to go within an ace of scoring. Tester, taking the ball in his own territory, beat the home halves completely, and reached the verge of the circle before he transferred to Allen. The centre forward made no mistake with a high shot from well out. When Australia pressed, Smillie cleared confidently, but Cullen repressed the attempts of the home forwards to assume the aggressive. Powdrill beat Elliott in a breakaway down the left, the visitors -being forced to concede a corner in the ensuing play. At half-time, the score was: Australia 1, Waikato 1. Powdrill streaked along the side line to put Waikato within striking distance, but Milner worked back to neutral territory. Lee saved temporarily, but Roughton connected with a loose ball, and before the defence realised the position, he switched it past the keeper. Waikato attacked, but Reid cleared. With six minutes to go, the play was fast and exciting, as the Waikato van again took charge. The inside forwards handled in a sparkling rush which culminated in Spiers putting the net back with a push shot from close in. Leggett got the bail in a handy position just before the bell and transferred to Allen, who reduced the Australian deficit with a sharp shot from close in. Time was then called with the score: Waikato 3, Australia 2. AUCKLAND RETAINS CHALLENGE SHIELD IPBBSS 4SSICIATION TELEOUAM.i AUCKLAND, August 19. WOMEN'S REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES CANTERBURY BEATS ELLESMERE Playing at Doyletton on Saturday the Canterbury women's A and B representative teams defeated Ellesmere, the A team winning by 8 goals to 1, and the B's by 1 to 0. The match between the first elevens was fairly even in the first half, the town team taking some time to settle down, but in the second spell there was only one side in the picture. The second elevens were evenly matched, with Canterbury having slightly the better of the play, but bad circle work spoiled many chances. CANTERBURY A (8) v. ELLESMERE A (1) Canterbury attacked from the start, but B. Shearer, on the left wing for Ellesmere, returned play. Canterbury continued on the offensive, but two centres by D. Dickey went begging. Ellesmere had a turn on attack, but K. Alley sent play back. M. Hillsdon sent N. Prestney and M. McKenzie away, but the final shot missed. A free hit brought relief to Ellesmere, and the forwards came through, and M. Gwrvtkin opened ite score with a good shot. This reverse put life into Canterbury, and almost immediately D. Dickey levelled the score with an easy shot. At half-time Ellesmere was attacking with the score unchanged. Even play marked the opening of the second spell till M. Gudsell sent Canterbury away, two shots at goal just missing. Ellesmere attacked, but K. Alley gave to D. Dickey, to M. McKenzie. who scored with a good angle shot. A moment later another shot was turned out. Free hits gave some relief to Ellesmere, till G. Mortimer sent D. Dickey away, the shot going wide. Canterbury still attacked, and from a beautiful centre by A. King E. Iggo goaled. At this stage Canterbury was definitely on ton, and except for occasional bursts Ellesmere was on the defence all the time. Getting plenty of the boll from the halves the Canterbury forwards were in fine form, and further goals were added by A. King, E. Iggo, N. Prestney. and M. McKenzie (2), the final score being: Canterbury 8, Ellesmere 1. The referees were Messrs G. Bray and J. Smith. CANTERBURY *t (1) v. ELLESMERE B (0) Ellesmere attacked at the start, but M. Mackie and S. Muirson brought relief, and Ellesmere conceded a corner. B. Kennedy and K. Bell kept the town side on attack, but good chances were missed. Ua and down play followed, free hits bringing relief to both sides. A good clearing hit by D. Jones put Canterbury on attack, and from a centre by M. Mackie W. Duncan ooened Canterbury's score, and halftime came soon after. The second half was mostly uninteresting, with each side having several but bsd circle work spoilt the chances, and time was called with the score: Canterbury 1, Ellesmere 0. The referees were Messrs E. Maindenalcl tnd L. Smith.
