HOCKEY
SENIOR GAMES PLAYED UNIVERSITY AND TRINITY STILL LEVEL Only senior hockey games were played on Saturday, all other matches being postponed on account of the weather, including games that had been arranged between the junior representatives and Malvern, and also all women's competition matches. The rain which had fallen steadily during the morning ceased after midday, but the grounds were wet and slippery. University and Trinity won their respective games, and are still level at the top of the championship. With only one more .round to play, it is probable that a final between these two will be necessary to decide the winner of the senior championship. Selwyn defeated Redcliffs by the odd goal in five, and replaces Sydenham as third on the ladder. Next Saturday Trinity will play Selwyn and University will play Sydenham, and the results of these games will be eagerly awaited. All lower grade competitions are concluded, with the exception ot the final of the primary schools' A grade between Sydenham and Lyttelton District High School, which will be played on Saturday next. Sydenham opened up; but Rogers stopped the rush and Davies broke away and sent in a great shot which Rhind blocked, Sydenham retaliated and Thompson frustrated a good attempt to score by Rusbridge. Trinity took a turn on attack, and Davies shot fast; but Rhind put the ball behind and later Dash showed cleverness in blocking a shot from Davies. Downie started a forward rush for Sydenham, which Rogers intercepted well. Lester then dispatched Davies for Trinity, Burke intercepting and transferring play to midfield. Lester successfully held up Sydenham's forwards and sent McCormick away, the latter passing to Forman, whose centre to Davies was turned to account. Half-time score: Trinity 1, Sydenham 0. In the second spell, C. Rogers set the Trinity forwards moving, and Radcliffe passed neatly to Davies, the latter carrying on to register a smart goal. Trinity 2, Sydeaham 0. Downie obtained possession on Sydenham's left, and a good centre gave Rusbridge an opening, Thompson effecting a brilliant save. W. Bowden was responsible for Trinity's next offensive by some clever stick work, and Forman received a well-timed pass, the latter's centre being held up by Rhind. C. Rogers stopped a right wing attack by Sydenham,. and Forman eventually gained possession and centred to P. McCormick, who netted in brilliant fashion. Trinity 3, Sydenham 0. H. Burtt hooked the ball into the corner of the net. Selwyn 1, Redcliffs 0. Just afterwards. Daracott saved well from Cornish. E. Grafton staged a brilliant run on Redcliil's left wing and later the same team was unlucky to miss scoring from a penalty corner. Halftime was called with the scores: Selwyn 1, Redcliffs 0. Howard made no mistake for Redcliffs with a good shot just after resuming. Selwyn 1. Redcliffs 1. Coleman unsuccessfully shot a moment later, the ball soaring over the crossbar. Walklin sent in a good centre, Cornish rounding off the effort with a beautiful goal. Selwyn 2, Redcliffs 1. E. Prebble evened the scores for Redcliffs after a hard struggle in the Selwyn goal-mouth. Redcliffs 2, Selwyn 2. Prebble centred to Coleman, who shot wide. S. Andrews then dispatched Walklin on Selwyn's right, Thompson displaying great defence. Walklin unluckily shot too high when confronted with an open goal. T. Burtt put Selwyn in the lead, the Redcliffs goalkeeper allowing the ball to roll in, thinking it had been hit from outside the circle, but the ball had been deflected from Burtt's stick. Selwyn 3, Redcliffs 2. An offside breach spoilt a splendid opportunity for Redcliffs to equalise. Redcliffs tried determinedly to make up the deficiency in the closing stages. The game ended: Selwyn 3, Redcliffs 2. Referees: Messrs E. Cummins and E. Harvey. UNIVERSITY v. TECHNICAL University defeated Technical in a game that was fast and full of interest. University opened the score a few minutes after the start, Hayes following in from a corner and netting quickly. University 1, Technical 0 University set up a series of attacks and the game was held in Technical's end, and two penalty corners were taken without result. E. Rogers went away on Technical's left, but the centre was sent astray by Cole. Heaton and Kiddey were prominent in a right wing effort for Technical, the latter following in well and scoring off a rebound after the goalkeeper had stopped a shot from Heaton. The same pair made a second attempt; but Penny intercepted the centre and transferred play to the other end. Play was even until half-time, which came with the scores: University 1, Technical 1. University had the better of the second spell, scoring three goals and keeping the visitors out throughout the spell. A solid forward movement bv University's front line enabled Barnett to net from a scramble shortly after the resumption, and shortly after Technical was forced to concede a corner, which Ford turned to account. University 3, Technical 1. Technical made desperate efforts to equalise, and dominated the play for a short spell; but R. Penney and S. McDonald set up a solid defence and Cooper finally sent the University forwards away to carry play to Technical's circle, where a penalty bully was fought out between J. Goldstone (Technical), and Barnett. the former succeeding in clearing the circle. Technical forced play to University's circle, where a penalty corner was taken without result.
