Watkins, of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, Christchurch, is starting a first aid class in the parish room to-day. . Arrangements are well in hand for the annual football dance. LINCOLN A valedictory social was held in the public hall on Wednesday evening by the Lincoln Basketball Club in honour of Miss Audrey Morland, who is to be married next month. Miss Morland ha 3 given valuable sen-ice to {Tie club as a player and referee for the last eight years. Mr C. Howell, on behalf of the* members, presented Miss Morland with a silver tea service. Mr E. Carter briefly responded. Music for the dancing was played by Miss E. Clark, of Greenpark, with extras by Miss Irene Wood and Mrs H. Golding. Monte Carlos were won by the following:—Miss A. Smith and Mr R. Walburton. Miss E. Ford and Mr J. Cuneen, Miss Joyce Mitchell and Mr G. Kilgour. The prize-winners at cards were Mrs Moody and Mr Lon Moore. Items were given by Miss Sheila Munro and Master Arthur Vopley. Miss Ruth Henry was accompanist. ! The children of the Lincoln school visited the winter show on Wednesday, after spending a happy and profitable time there, they were taken to the museum and botanic gardens by the headmaster, Mr L. J. Thompson and his assistant. STYX At the tenth anniversary celebrations of the Styx Presbyterian Chinch the Rev, John Millar conducted the morning service, and in the evening the service was taken by Mr J. Logic. The celebrations were continued with a tea-meeting. The- birthday cake was cut by Mrs Preston. After tea the Sunday school pri/.es were distributed. The moderator, the Rev. E. Bandy, congratulated the charge on attaining its first decade, and the splendid attendance of members and adherents. Later a concert, arranged by Mr R. M. Donaldson, wa3 given. The Rev. J. Farrar thanked all who had helped to make the anniversary a success. HORNBY An innovation was introduced by the Hornby School Committee, when the school was thrown open to inspection by the parents. A fair number of the parents attended. The function proved an outstanding success, and hope was expressed that it would be instituted as an annual affair. A welcome was extended to the visitors by the chairman, Mr Frank A. McTeigue. The headmaster, Mr F. E. O'Flynn, also addressed the parents. He stated that any means of bringing the parents and teachers into cooperation, was a step in the right direction. At the conclusion of the inspection, a lecture on "The teeth and their relation to the children's health," wa3 given to the parents by Nurse M. K. Gardiner, nurse at, the Hornby dental clinic. HALKETT A strong contingent of members of the Darficld branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union visited Halkett and debated with members of the Halkett branch. Mr G. C. Warren, president of the North Canterbury provincial executive, was present, and gave a short address on the general activities of the union. He stated that thei-te were 22,000 members in the union, an increase of 2000 this year. The subject of the debate was, "That farmers on the Canterbury plains make a greater profit by buying their ewes than breeding them." Supporting the motion were the members of the Halkett branch, Messrs A. Manson. J. D. Penney, W. G. Hilie, and R. S. Roper. Opposing the motion were Messrs W. W. Mulholland, C. O. Redfern, J. H. Sym'e, and H. Gillanders. The judge, Mr Clarke, gave his decision in favour of Darfield, with a margin of nine points. DARFIELD The fortnightly social evening organised by the committee of the Darficld Football Club was held in the supper room of the hall. There was a good attendance and cards were played, the winners being Misses R. Stewart and D. Painter and Messrs R. Painter and A. Stewart. Music for the dancing was played by Messrs D. Prain and L. Westwood. The annual meeting of the Darfield Horticultural Society was held in the lounge of the Memorial Hall. Mrs C. G. Jarmaa (president) occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The annual report and balance-sheet was submitted and approved. A vote of thanks to the president and other outgoing olfeors was carried unanimously. DUNSANDEL There was a large attendance at a meeting of the Young People's Club held in the Church Hall. The Rev. F. B. Lawrence gave instruction in first-aid and the setting of broken bones. The Rev. R. R. Adair was judge for a debate on the subject, "That modern inventions create unemployment." The affirmative was led by Mr Frank Robinson, with Mr L. H Johnson seconder, and the negative was led by Mr D. T. Aldridge, with Mr W. Tweedy as seconder. The decision was awarded to the affirmative. Community singing was held with Mr B. D. Watson at the piano. SHEFFIELD The following players have been chosen from the Sheffield Football Club to play in the Malvern representative match against Hurunui to-mor-row: C. C. Times, Ray Atkinson, H. Vickery, F. Jones, and M. Bull. The men chosen to represent the local hockey club in the representative matches to be played in Christchurch on Saturday are Len Jones, L. P. Hawke, K. Rutledge, E. W. Rodgcrs, A. Adams, A. Graydon, J. Wilson, G. Innes, and B. Robinson. A surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs J. Rennie, of Sheffield, to do honour to Miss Elizabeth Rennie on the occasion of her twentyfirst birthday. The guest of honour was presented with a golden key by her parents, and the toast of the evening was proposed by Mr G. V. Bergh. A competition was won by Miss Pat Rennie, and musical items were given by Misses Anne, Pat., and Marion Rennie and Misses Bates raid Betty Rennie sang solos.
