EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS
AUCTION OF WORKS BY MR | CEDRIC SAVAGE A collection of paintings in oils and water-colours by Mr Cedric Savage, a prominent Chrislchurch artist, who is to leave shortly lor Sydney, will be sold this morning at the auction rooms of H. G. Livingstone and Company. Mr Savage is an artist whose reputation is soundly established in Australia as well as in New Zealand. His present collection, which is on view at the auction rooms, consists of Fijian. Australian, and New Zealand landscapes, painted on medium-sized canvases. Mr Savage is a member of the Royal Art Society of Australia, and also of the Australian Watercolour Institute and the New Zealand Society of Artists He was born in Christchurch, and studied painting, modelling, and designing here, and later for four years in Sydney. After a return to Christchurch within recent years, he has been painting in Fiji and again in Australia. Many of his paintings are exhibited in New Zealand and Australian galleries. His work lias received high praise from such critics as William More, Howard Ashton, and M. J. McNally. At a recent meeting of the New Zealand Society of Artists, Mr Savage, who is a vice-president of the society, was given a vote of thanks for his interest and assistance to the society, and regret was expressed at the economic circumstances which made it necessary for him to leave for Australia in order to seek greater opportunities.
KAIKOURA NEWS The Kaikoura Brass Band will give an open-air performance at the hospital grounds on Sunday, weather permitting. Mr E. H. Morris, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis, is making good progress towards recovery. At the euchre tournament held at the Hapuku Hall, the prize-winners were Messrs W. Vaughan and J. Smith, Miss Queenie Jacobs and Mrs W. Vaughan. The winners at the Suburban Fsill euchre evening were Miss D. Chapman and Mr J. Eaton. There was a good attendance at the Fernleigh woolshed at the dance supervised by the Lynton-Fernleigh Tennis Club, and an enjoyable time was spent to music played by Messrs A. Barker (accordeon) and W. Tombs (banjo). Mr E. Gregory was master of ceremonies. The weekly session of the Workers' Educational Association was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. H. Flower, the subject being Galsworthy's play, "The Pigeon," Dr. W. G. Todd acting as leader. Next week the session will be held at the hospital, when the same author's play, "Escape," will be dealt with, Mrs C. A. Jensen being the leader. A senior football team from Rangiora will probably visit Kaikoura on September 1, and the Cameron shieli game, against Cust, will probably take place at Kaikoura on September 8. The following hockey players have been selected to play to-morrow on Takahanga Domain:—W. A. Ferry; H. Stewart, K. Warcham; J. Harris, F. Taylor, S. Cormack; L. Sabiston, S. Low, W. Woolman, B. Stewart, C. Wareham. Emergencies: G. Pablechequc and W. Adair. The men's game will be preceded by a women's match between Cheviot and Kaikoura Old Girls. The monthly meeting of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held at the Masonic Hall, Mrs G. D. Smith (acting president) presiding. The secretary (Mrs W. Lee) was thanked for securing an invalid chair, Mrs B. McKeeman for supplying wood, and Mrs T. Adair for tea. Final arrangements were made for the spring flower show to be held on September 29. Mesdames T. Adair, A. B. Clark, and C. E. Lane were appointed to take charge of the afternoon tea. The secretary was askei to communicate with Mrs G. E. T. Shand, asking her to act as judge at the show. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames C. Wareham, H. Macule, and Miss Mary Mackltx
