ARBOR DAY

* OBSERVANCE IN HEATHCOTE COUNTY The Heathcote County Council decided at its meeting last night to make an endeavour to observe Arbor Day in each riding. The Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. J. A. Young) wrote asking that the first Wednesday in August be observed as Arbor Day. "In view of the national importance of treeplanting, it is hoped that effort will be made to organise suitable celebrations on this day." The Minister added that he was asking the Minister for Railways and the Postmaster-General whether they would arrange, as was arranged last year, for officers who could be spared to be granted time off to participate in local celebrations; a similar request had been made to the Public Service Commissioner. Cr. W. W. Scarff raised objection to the proposal simply to receive the letter. "It's a fine thing," he said. "I remember when I was at school being taken to plant trees. I will go ahead and do something on the day in Cashmere." It was decided that each member of the council try to do some tree-plant-ing in his own riding. The council decided, on Cr. ScarfFs motion, to write and thank Mr J. A. McPherson, curator of the Botanic for gifts of 20 cuttings of a special willow to the Hillsborough riding, and of 16 to Cashmere riding.
