# MONTHLY MEETING REPORTS OP COMMITTEES At a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board held yesterday morning there were present Messrs W. P. Spencer (chairman), G. W. Armitage, H. Bignell, S. Smith, J. J. Hurley, S. Baird, W. A. Banks, R. Wild, J. W. Preen, C. S. Thompson, G. Benstead, and S R. Evison. The buildings committee reported having received a renewed application from the Christchurch East School Committee for the rebuilding of the school. It was resolved that members of the buildings committee should make an inspection of the Chustchurch East and St. Albans Schools on the Tuesday before the July rneet ing of the board with a view to deciding what positions these proposals to build should occupy on the list of urgent works. . The board decided to inform the Hororata School Committee that ourable consideration could not be granted its application for the erection of a bicycle shed at the school, for which estimates of £lB and £lB 10s had been submitted by local buiidei A letter was received from the department approving a grant for the provision of additional accommodation at the Mangamaunu School. In response to the board's enquiiy the Oxford School Committee intimated its willingness to contribute the sum of £2 towards the erection ol: a bicycle shed involving an expenditure of £ 15. It was resolved to inform the committee that in the circumstances authority could not be given for the work to be proceeded with The View Hill School Committee offered to find £lO towards the cost of repairing the library building adjoining the school if the board would provide approximately £ls. ihe oner was declined. . A letter was received from the 1' airlie School Committee advising that the Fairlie Ex-Pupils* x\ssociution had offered £7O for the provision of entrance gates at the school and seeking the board's permission to erect these in accordance with a plan submitted. The application was granted. Mr Preen was deputed to report, on the Timaru Main School Committee's views concerning tlu question of the redistribution of land controlled by the school committee and the technical association with the object of providing the latter with further space for the erection of additional buildings. The Timaru South School Committee's application for permission to erect <x dental clinic on the school site was referred to Messrs Preen and Benstead, with power to act. Mr Bignell was asked to report on the Waiho Gorge committee's application for the erection of a shelter shed at the school. The following plans were approved: Rebuilding of schools at Kaiapoi Island and at Ross. Additions to the Technical School at Timaru. The board decided to approve an application from the Birdling's ! lat School Committee for support to a petition asking for the construction of a bridge at Lake Forsyth.
School Committees The Cobden School Committee reported that an election for the appointment of a new committee had not been held, and recommended Messrs A. H. McKane, H. L. Spencer, F. W. Baillie, J. Ford, U. J. Mettrick, F. H. Eggelton, and Mrs E. M. Burrell for appointment. The recommendation was approved. A report from Dromore stated that Messrs A. H. Baughen, H. M. Copland, B. Maguire, W. Mclntyre, and D. McSweeney had been elected a committee at an informal meeting. The appointments were approved. The following members recommended to complete the personnel of committees wei'e approve^:—Prebbleton: Messrs W. Rains and J. McClintock. Waimate: Mr A. A. McKenzie. Commissioners were appointed to act at Okuku, Mr R. J. Philpott; Pukekura, Mr W. E. Foster; Te Kinga, Mr J. P. Robinson; and Wandle Valley, Mr E. Stackhousc.
The senior inspector (Mr A. McNeill) reported on the application for the establishment of a school at Rapahoe. The school could not be recommended because the site was comparatively close to Runanga. Advice was received from the department that retrospective payments of grade O salaries to teachers who had recently been reappointed, although filling the positions from February 1, wolild not be authorised. A letter was received from the Rev. S. A. Mead regarding an exhibition of pictures relating to the Passion Play to be shown. Mr Mead asked the board to allow him to use school organisations in arranging exhibitions. The matter was referred to local school committees. A circular from Mr N. M. Bell, chairman of the No More War Movement, asking the board to support a petition referring to,the broadcasting of controversial subjects, was received. Refresher Courses The senior inspector was given authority to arrange refresher course; for teachers in various centres. Mr McNeill said the courses would be commenced in July. The lecturers would be Miss J. Brownlee, Mr 11. E. Longworth (physical instruction), Mr E. Jennor, A.R.A.M. (music), and Mr J. Masterton (art and drawing). After a discussion in committee (he board decided to endorse the recommendation of the Canterbury standing committee on education to refer the question of the exclusion of the five-year-olds from the primary schools of New Zealand and the extension of the school leaving" age to 15 years to the New Zealand Carnegie Research Committee for thorough investigation.
