GIFT EVENING A kitchen evening was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs H. R. Peers, jun., when the friends of Miss D. Jones gathered in honour of her coming marriage. The room was gaily decorated with streamers, and an excellent programme of games, competitions, and dancing was provided. Mr H. R. Peers was master of ceremonies. The guest of honour received many useful presents, for which she suitably expressed her appreciation. Mr C. Weir, on behalf of the gathering, thanked the host and hostess. The competitions were won by Mrs R. Jones, Mr R. Price, and Mr C. Smith. Those present were Mr and Mrs H. R. Peers, jun., Mr and Mrs C. Smith, Mi' and 'Mrs B. Cropp, Mr and Mrs C. Weir, Mr and Mrs H. Chaplin, Mr and Mrs J. Burrows, Mr and Mrs R. Jones, Mrs Burrows, sen., Mrs Derrett and Mrs H. Burrows, Misses D. Jones, C. Delahunt, J. Delahunt, E. Burrows, C. Burrows, and E. Mayne, Messrs T. Burrows, R. Price, W. Peers. B. Gilmour. Charity Ball A charity ball, in aid of the Mayor's Distress Fund, is being organised by Mrs H. R. Smith, and will take place early in July. Tributes Paid References were made to the loss the district had suffered by the deaths of Mr A. Uren and Mr T. H. Clough, at the meeting of the Progress League. The chairman (Mr W. J. Boyce) said that Mr Uren was one of the oldest members of the league. He was a j I public-spirited man, and at one time represented the district on the Wai- | mairi County Council. A tribute was paid to his integrity. Mr Clough had given great service to the community. As organiser and secretary to the monster queen carnival he was largely responsible for the large sum of money that was raised to build the memorial hall. He was a born organiser, and took a great interest in sport. Tributes were also paid by Messrs R. Rickerbv, T. A. Gates, J. Sturrock, and C. Palmer. Votes of sympathy were passed with the relatives. Card Evening Euchre was played at the Horticultural Society's weekly card evening. The winners were: Mrs W. W. Taylor 1. Miss R. Smallbon 2. Mrs D. Roberts 3. The consolation prize went to Mr J. E. Yates. Papanui Pictures "Pleasure Cruise" will be screened at the Papanui pictures to-night. Genevieve Tobin taking the leading part, supported by Roland Young and the well-known Herbert Mundin. The plot deals with the events on a pleasure cruise beyond the three-mile limit.
