SIR ARTHUR DUDLEY DOBSON
PROPOSED GIFT OF - PORTRAIT In Tuesday's issue of "The Mr Roy Twyneham, vice-president ot the Canterbury Automobile Association, who originally suggested that the portrait of Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson by Mrs A. Elizabeth Kelly should be . purchased and presented to the city, explained briefly, in reply to a cor- . respondent's letter to the editor, the . reason why the proposal was not gone on with. The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), to whom the letter also was submitted, following his customary practice, declined to make any „ comment. The municipal authorities yesterday issued the following statement, whica amplifies, in some particulars, the statement made by Mr Twyneham:— "Enquiries have been made concerning the proposal made some time ago that a picture by a Christchurch artist of Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson should be acquired by the city. ■ "The position is that the proposal was not acceptable to the family, woo made representations to the MayOr to that effect. It was explained to the Mayor that the family attitude had nothing to do with the quality of the picture, which was by a most competent artist, but because the wish of the family was that any such memorial to Sir Arthur should perpetuate , his memory at an earlier and more virile stage of his life. ■! i "In the circumstances the Mayor felt that he could do no other than drop the proposal in deference to the wishes of the family."
