SUPPORT FOR RENEWAL ; OP NO. 10 SCHEME j ARBOR DAY OBSERVANCE (SPZCUL TO THE PEISS.) NELSON, June 22. The Nelson City Council has received from the Builders' Association a request for support of a proposal to the Unemployment Board the building subsidy be renewed this year. The letter from the stated that their case in support of a" renewal of the subsidy had been presented to the board. From April to December last year building had increased. but since then there had been a decline of business on all buildersf lines and also in the output of sawmills. The builders suggested that a subsidy be made only on buildings costing up to £2OOO. Cr. F. Huggins said he had heard criticism of the scheme, and had heard builders and carpenters speak in favour of it Generally he thought the scheme had been of benefit to the people as a whole. He moved: "That, while realising that the building subsidy scheme had disadvantages, the council recommends the continuance of a subsidy on the lines suggested by the associated builders for favourable consideration by the Unemployment Board." Cr. G. L. Page said no doubt the No. 10 scheme had been the meanj of taking many men from the unemployment register. In Nelson it had been a great success. ' Cr. E. R. Neale said he did not fee! at all happy regarding the subsidy scheme. Not enough thought had been given to the man who had built his house out of his own pocket . No doubt, as a temporary scheme, it had helped the unemployed; but it had forced down the value of the house built with assistance. The man a house built under the scheme could afford to sell at a lower price, than the one who had built without assistance. The motion was carried unanimously. Arbor Day A request by the Minister for Internal Affairs that Arbor Day be recognised in August this year -was adopted by the City Council Cr Neale expressed pleasure that an effort was being made to reinstate Arbor Day. , , Cr. S. A. Gibbs said the principle of the day was a magnificent one. Germany provided a striking example of such an annual celebration, every person being expected to plant two trees. „ T Kotary Club The weekly luncheon of the Nelson Rotary Club was presided over by Rotarian President J- P. Jamieson. The speaker was Mr F. G. Gibbs, who; described in a most interesting manner a visit to Mount Vesuvius during his recent visit to Italy. A vote of thanks was passed, OB the motion pf Rotarian E. R. Neale.
