* ARRANGEMENTS FOR COMBINED APPEAL Keen enthusiasm was the feature of the meeting of the general committee of the Young Women's Christian Association and Young Men's Christian Association combined street appeal which was held yesterday afternoon. In welcoming about 20 members of the committee, the chairman, Mr W. F. Blackwell, said the attendance indicated the Interest that was being shown, and augured well for the success of the street appeal on July 6. Mr J. J. Staples, in the unavoidable absence of the chairman of the attractions committee, Mr G. F. Allen, made a statement of the attractions as previously reported with the additional statement that the by-laws committee of the City Council had granted permission for the bands to parade on the Friday evening, and that permission had been given for a mock court to be held in the Square on the Friday afternoon and evening on the condition that the fines be nominal, and that they be consented to by those arrested.

Satisfaction was expressed at the willingness of the newspapers to cooperate to the fullest extent. Miss E. Bowden mentioned that a combined committee from the Young Women's Christian Association and Young Men's Christian Association Ladies' Auxiliary was arranging for produce, sweets, cakes and jam stalls, and that gifts would be welcomed from any source. <*' Enrolment Committee Meets A meeting of the enrolment committee of the Young Women's Christian Association and Young Men's Christian Association street appeal was held yesterday when it was reported that while the response to man corners was good the replies from the individual collectors were coming in very slowly, possibly due to the prevalence of influenza. Mr Colin Miln, the actingchairman of the enrolment committee, stressed the necessity of obtaining the maximum number of collectors. It was reported that 39 corners had been promised and in addition to this 149 individual collectors had so far promised to assist. It was hoped that by Monday evening the committee would be able to report a greatly increased number of .collectors. It was stated that collectors were .especially scarce from 1 p.m. .onwards" and that a great many more collectors would be needed for the period from 7 to 10 p.m. The total numbers promised, including the corners manned by organisations, was 403.
