TIMARU PERSONAL Captain H. C. White, who has been acting-harbourmaster at Timaru since the retirement of Captain D. McDougall, was appointed harbourmaster at the meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board yesterday. Mr W. Hayman, who has been absent from meetings of the Timaru Harbour Board for some time owing to illness, has now recovered and was able to take his seat at the board's meeting yesterday. The chairman (Mr G. T. Dawson) expressed pleasure at seeing Mr Hayman restored to health. Harbour Board Meets A meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board was held yesterday, Mr G. T. Dawson presiding. A statement of receipts and expenditure from May 23 to June 18 showed receipts to amount to £2606 15s 2d which, with £3558 12s 6d credit balance brought forward, made a total of £6165 7s Bd. Accounts to be passed for payment amounted to £2183 8s Id, leaving a credit balance of £3981 19s 7d. The credit balance for the corresponding period last year was £5052 7s Bd. It was decided, on the motion of Mr W. M. Whatman, to express the opinion that it was a dangerbus procedure for contributing local bodies to frame estimates before the board struck its rate and that in future the board, if possible, should strike the rate a month earlier than has been customary. It was decided on the suggestion of the acting-harbourmaster (Captain H. C. White) to purchase a quantity of wire rope for mooring purposes to replace manilla and chain at present used. The report of the acting-harbour-master (Captain H. C. White) stated that the arrivals during the month of May totalled 36 steam and motor vessels with an aggregate of 37,782 tons the departures being 37 such vessels with an aggregate of 47,485 tons With the exception of three days, May 13, 14 and 15, the weather had been line. On the dates mentioned a heavy range was experienced in the harbour, with a lift of three feet at the wharves. Women's Division Mrs B. E. Evans presided over a meeting of the South Canterbury executive of the Farmers' Union yesterday afternoon. An application was received from a boy in the district for admission to Flock House. It was decided to submit the application to the advisory board. The resignation of Miss McEachern, of the divisional housekeeping staff, was received and it was agreed to send her a letter appreciative ol her services. Ihe appointment of Mrs Evans as a second member of the National Council of Women was approved. Mesdames J. Caird and W. Ilarvey were appointed delegates to the annual conference to be held in Wellington next month. Mesdames Evans, McLeod, and R. B. Hartc were appointed to confer with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association regarding the forthcoming show. Kennel Club Mr F. G. Saville presided over a meeting of the committee of the South Canterbury Kennel Club. Arrangements wore made for the forthcoming show. Mr G. Bilteliffe (Christchurch) wrote arrecing to act as judge for all classes. The secretary (Mr F. J. Cook) reported that the application for the use of the drill hall had been granted. The National Tobacco Company wrote offering to present a cup to be competed ior us the club thought fit. Replying to the application of the club for the establishment of a lethal chamber for dogs, the Borough Council stated that adequate arrangements had been made and the council did not feel inclined to do anything further. The council also wrote regarding the request of the club that a reduction should be made in the fees charged to register dogs belonging to unemployed. The council stated that it could not reduce the fees, but that arrangements had been made for fees to be paid by instalments.
GERALDINE The sixth round of the Gcraldine and District Cribbagc Association's competitions will be played at Victoria House on Tuesday night, when Orari Bridge will play Oddfellows, Gcraldine Bowlers will play South End, and Gcraldine Citizens will play Raukapuka. Geraldine Citizens —G. W, Coombs, D. Mac Donald, A. L. Brenton, T. Twigg, F. Naylor, W. Tangney, A. J. Burmester, and T. Buckley. Oddfellows —S. H. Lapthorne, H. Maister, H. Hill, G. Worner, E. P. Bennett, F. W. Grayburn, and R. Tagg. South End —F. G. Hayward, G. Cowie, H. Blissett, F. Tiplady, W. T. Mole, E. P. White, N. Simmons, and J. Watkins. Under the auspices of the Geraldine Secondary Former Pupils' Association a very successful reunion social was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday night, when there was a large attendance of members. The president, Mr W. C. Webb, was master of ceremonies, and music was supplied by Miss Doris Paterson and Mr W. Smith. The president expressed pleasure at the large number of younger members present, and hoped that they would continue to take an interest in the association. Impromptu speeches were delivered by Messrs H. W. W. Williamson, D. C. McKech'.iie, and M. R. Miller, who also congratulated the committee on the success of the function. A statue waltz was won by Miss P>. Dean and Mr J. L. Lorimer, while musical competitions were won by Miss R. GrindeH, Mr G. Paterson, and Miss N. Beech, and Mr M. Askin.
