ASHBURTON relief op distress There has been an excellent response to the circular appeal for the relief of distress, and so far £292 7s 4d has been received by the Ashburton District Relief Committee. The principal contributions received since last Saturday are as follows: Mr D. J. Morrow £lO, Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts £5, Mr J. Moore (Ruapuna) £5, Mr F. Frampton £5, Mr D. S. Rundle £5, John Orr and Company Ltd., £5, Messrs McDonald and Dunl'op £3, Sir William Nosworthy £3, Mr J. Stevenson £3, Mr R. L. Stephenson £3 3s. Magistrate's Court Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., presided at the sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A charge o£ assaulting William Valentine Cobden, on May 20, was preferred against Stanley Pennal (Mr L. A. Charles), who pleaded guilty. Sergeant W. T. Kelly said Pennal was at the pie-cart, and mistook Cobden for some other person with whom he had a grievance. He struck Cobden three times. A fine of £2 was imposed. The application for suppression of the name was refused. For being in possession of unlicensed wireless receiving sets, Matthew Farrell. Patrick Thomas Curran, and Waltef S. Kingsbury were each fined 5s with costs, while Christina Halkett was fined 7s 6d with costs. Ernest Hayman was charged that being the owner of a shop in which smoking requisites were sold, he failed to observe a half-holiday, and with failing to notify the inspector of the Labour Department that he was selling tobacco and cigarettes. Defendant said he was the proprietor of a pie-cart and did not open up for business until all shops were closed. The magistrate explained that defendant was liable, and he would order the payment of costs. 10s on the
first charge. The second charge was withdrawn.
Similar charges were preferred against Aubrey Clarke, fruiterer and confectioner. Burnett street (Mr R. Kennedy). The inspector (Mr A- C. Williams) said it was defendant's second offence. A fine of £1 was imposed. Mr Kennedy said he thought the case was one for special exemption, as the selling of cigarettes in this instance was a public convenience after tobacconists were closed. Motor-cars Collide Motor-cars driven by Mrs H. G. Kemp, Cox street, Allenton, and Mr T. Drennan. Winter's 'road, Allenton, collided near the water tower on Thursday evening. The right side of each car was damaged. No one was injured. Personal Mr J. A. Tansley, who has been on the staff of the Bank of New South Wales for more than four years, has been transferred to Dunedin, and will leave Ashburton early next month. Mr Bruce Brown, son of Mr and Mrs John Brown, of Ashburton, and formerly of Lowcliffe, has been appointed field inspector's assistant attached to the Lands and Survey Department. His headquarters will be in Christchurch. Bible Society At the annual meeting of the Ashburton branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society on Thursday at which the Rev. E. W. Batts presided, the following officers were elected: — President, the Rev. G. B. Hinton; vicepresidents, Mrs H. A. Lloyd, Sister Mildred, the Ven. Archdeacon A. J. Petrie, and the Rev. R. S. Watson, Captain N. E. Bicknell, and Pastor W. E. Vickery; secretary, Miss A. C. • Watson; treasurer, Mrs M. A. Grainger. Mr Batts was accorded a Vote of thanks for his services as president and on behalf of the society Archdeacon Petrie wished him every success in his work at Gisborne. Ashburton Winter Show Additional features yesterday at the Ashburton Fanciers' Society's annual show which concluded in the evening were the cat and rabbit sections. The show was well patronised Loth during the day and evening. Further special awards were announced as follows: Connolly Cup for most points in fruit, honey, preserves, brea<, scones, and cakes—Mrs G. Hoatten. Silver Cup presented by Mr J. Connolly, M.P., for most points in Angora rabbits—Mr H. R. Hopwood. Mr Hopwood also received the awai'd for the best Angora rabbit in the show. South Island Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association's championship for the best drake or duck, other than Indian Runner—G. Suttie. The association's championship for the best Persian kitten under eight months, and the society's trophy for the best cat in the show, were both won by Miss E. Boyns, of Christchurch. The award for the best local cat in the show was won by Mrs C. Bruce, and that for the best Persian cat went to Miss Boyns. Miss F. A.
