FENDALTON PARK
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PIIESS. Sir,—Regarding the meeting con;erning the proposed Fendalton Park, an account of which appeared in this morning's issue of "The Press," I wish to congratulate you on the fairness of th-> concise report printed, when, as in most meetings of the sort it is obviously tain Quarters if not explained, and it is in connexion with what you describe as an "allegorical tale," which I am sure suffers from condensation, that I crave your indulgence for space n °Leading up to this I remarked at the meeting that Mr F. Scott, the other member for the riding, and myself, had saved Fendalton many thousands of pounds in one concern only. Probably only half a dozen ratepayers in the room knew exactly, beforehand, to what I referred; but the occasion was unique, the audience of ratepayers larger than I have ever before seen in Fendalton, and I could not resist the temptation to make some reference to the subject; although the chairman rather gave the show away by saying, when called to a pomt of order, that it was good politics on my part, and I did not often transgress. I was referring to the sealing of the Fendalton roads, and drew the analogy that in my career as an old farmer I had repeatedly seen cases where a new design of implement had come on the market, and enthusiastic farmers, not all of them young either, had rushed the machine, which at first sight seemed to exactly fill the bill. Within a short space of time it invariably happened that hidden imperfections ■ revealed themselves. Other shrewd inventors, or maybe the same, improved on the original machine, and there was nothing but a bad taste left in the mouths of those who had been too precipitate in purchasing. Verb sap. I reminded the ratepayers present that the taking of a poll would cost in my opinion at least £IOO, and it would be unfortunate for' Fendalton if all that good money out of its rates went west.—Yours, etc., GEO. GARDNER. June 22, 1934.
