NEW THEATRES

i « WORK TO START SOON The work of demolishing the buildings at Carey's corner, at the intersection of Colombo and Gloucester streets, where the new State Theatre will be erected, will begin within the next few weeks. Tenders for the work of demolition wero called yesterday and will close next Thursday. It is probable that tenders for the construction of the new theatre will be called within about a fortnight. The State will be one of two new theatres to be built in Christchurch by Amalgamated Theatres (N.Z.), Ltd., the other being the Roxy, which will stand in Worcester street, opposite the entrance to the Government Buildings. Work on the State site will be begun first as comparatively little demolition will bo required on the Roxy site. It is expected that both theatres will be ready for opening by the end of the year.
