The Hon. E. A. Ransom. Minister for Lands, arrived in I.yttclton yesterday morning by the steamer express," and went by train to Dunedin. He will open the Dunedin Winter Show, and will return to Wellington by the steamer express from Lyttelton next Tuesday night. He will, arrive in Christchurch on Monday next by train and spend Monday night and Tuesday in the city. Mr Ranson was accompanied by Mrs Ransom and his daughter, both of whom are making their first visit to the South Island. The Rev. H. .1. Boyd-Bell, of Kawhia, has been appointed vicar of Inglewood. Mr H. Brusey lel't Wellington on Tuesday by the Maunganui on a business visit to Sydney. Mr M. O'Mallev, of the staff of the Agricultural Department, New Plymouth, for the last three years, has been transferred to Auckland. Mr Harvey Turner returned to from Sydney by the Niagara on Monday, after a short business visit to Australia. Mr Henry J. Wernham, Auckland, left Wellington on a business trip to England by the Tainui on Wednesday. Superintendent D. J. Cummings was among the passengers from the North Island by the Rangatira yesterday.
Mr B. G. Clynick, R.N., whose term of service as engineer officer in H.M.S. Laburnum has expired, left Wellington by the Tainui on his return to England on Wednesday. Mr R. E. Pope, of Wellington, who has been engaged in the Supreme Court in Christchurch for the last three days, returned to Wellington by the steamer express last night. Mr J. Tlargesl, M.P., passed through Christchurch by the through express from Invercargill last evening on his way to Wellington. Sergeant A. McCarthy, who has been transferred from Dunedin to the New Brighton Police Station, arrived in Christchurch last evening. Mr S. Irwin Crookes left by the Niagara for Suva, where he will report to the Municipal Council on engineering matters. He expects to return about the middle of next month. Sympathy with. Mrs Bean and members of her family in the death of Mr P. E. Bean was expressed at a meeting of delegates to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last night. The meeting decided to place on record its appreciation of Mr Bean's services to lawn tennis during a long period. The Wellington Hospital Board last night accepted the resignation of the medical superintendent, Dr. H. Bayldon Ewen, who will enter private practice. Dr. Ewen has been associated with the hospital for 11 years, five as a physician, and six as medical superintendent.—Press Association. The Governor of New South Wales, Sir Philip Game, and Lady Game are through passengers on the Niagara on their way to England. They are accompanied by Mr David Game and Miss Rosemary Game. Sir Philip will visit England on personal business, and will return with his family via .the Panama Canal in time to reach Sydney in October. His Excellency is accompanied by Lieutenant-Com-mander C. M. E. Gilford, R.N.. A.D.C.
Mr W. G. F. Pinkham, assistant supervisor of the postal branch of tho Chief Post Office, Dunedin, has been re-elected unopposed to represent the officers of the postal branch on the post and telegraph appeal board. Mr G. A. Wilkes, postmaster at St. Andrews, has been elected unopposed as the representative of the officers of the telegraph branch. Mr li. V. Ward, Wellington, is the outgoing telegraph representative.— Press Association. Mr A. de B. Brandon, of Wellington, retired yesterday from the New Zealand Board of Directors of the Australian Mutual Provident Society after nearly 50 years in that position. Mr Brandon was appointed a director in August, 1888, and became deputy-chairman in May, 1903, and chairman of the board in 1910. Mr Brandon's total unbroken period of service to the society amounts to nearly 46 years. This, it is stated authoritatively, constitutes a record of service as a director of the society. At the close of his final meeting with the New Zealand directors yesterday, Mr Brandon was presented by nis colleagues with a handsome piece of plate on which their signatures had been inscribed. The presentation was made by Sir Harold Beauchamp, deputy-chairman, on behalf of himself and the other local directors, Sir William Hunt, Sir Alexander Roberts, and Mr J. G.
