RANGIORA The Rangiora postal staff during the last week has been working at high pressure receiving income tax returns and issuing new motor registrations. Although the staff was augmented, owing to the accommodation many persons had to wait a long time before they received attention. Many complaints were heard that the accommodation was inadequate, even for ordinary business. At the weekly card social of the local branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, held in the club rooms, there was an attendance of 72. ITie winner of the prize for cards was Mrs L. Moran. After a play-off, Mrs G. Walls was second. For the men, Mr G. Greig was first, and Mr F. Lilley was second. After the cards community singing was held, Mrs Holm accompanying. RGTHERHAM j There was a good attendance at the weekly social at the school. The winI ners of competitions were Mrs Cooksj ley and Mr L. Tavendale. Consolation ! prizes were won by Mrs Walsh and Mr E. Britton, jun. CULVERDEN The Culverden women's hockey team played the Hanmer Springs Women's Club in the Culverden domain on Wednesday afternoon in the Mount Palm Shield competition. Hanmer Springs won by two goals to 0, scored by Misses M. Peters and H. Farrow. Messrs H. Gallagher and N. Egan were the referees. At the fortnightly social on Wednesday. evening the prizes, given by Mr J. Rivers, were won by Mrs E. Burrows and Mr H. Young. Consolation prizes were won by Miss Dalzell and Mr W. Hamilton. The Amuri Collie Club will hold its annual trials on Mr G. Hartnell's property at the beginning of next week. So far the entries have not come up to the standard of previous years. Mr W. Mcßae will be the judge. Mr W. Thompson, stationmaster at Culverden, is being relieved during his annual holidays by Mr B. Lee. The weekly meeting of the Culverden Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club was well attended. The shooting in the weekly handicap competition was keen, the match being won by Mrs Taylor. The four-night competition resulted: Mrs H. Hempenstall 1, Mrs H. Croft 2, and Miss N. Hoban 3. The following are the scores:—Miss B. Hodgins 65, Miss E. Hooper 64, Miss F. Mockett 64, Mrs H. Todd, when the reading of the same play will be continued, Mr Teape being the leader. At a meeting of the Hapuku Hall Committee Mr A. E. Lester presided. A debit balance of 4s 2d was reported. It was decided to paint the roof of the hall and effect repairs. It was agreed that the key of the hall be left with Mr W. Thomas, on the ground of convenience. It was agreed that an open fireplace be installed in th'- hall, and that other improvements be made. Mr Luff, of Rai Falls, is the guest of Mr and Mrs P. J. Boyd, Sandy Bay. Miss Park has taken over the Grange Road School as mistress. Mr David Boyd and Mr and Mrs J. C. Harnett have left for Christchurch on a short holiday. DUNSANDEL In the women's flag match on Tuesday, Mrs R. J. Caldwell was the winner, carrying the flag to the twentieth. In the senior women's hockey match between and Dunsandel, Miss Grace Walker, a member of the home team, received injuries which resulted in her admission to St. George's Hospital. She will be unable to play again tills season.

HAWARDEN The annual dance of the Ilawarden branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the Mason's Flat Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance of residents as well as visitors from surrounding districts. Music for the dancing was played by Messrs C. L. Suridge and J. W. Heasley, with extras by Mr F. M. Wright. Songs were sung by the Misses Munro. Novelty dances held were won by Mr A. Thurlow and Miss L. Waters (statue dance) and Mr C. M. Harris and Mrs L. C. Wood (lucky spot). Mr W. L. Wright was master of ceremonies. CHEVIOT On Wednesday evening Mr L. Harry, who is employed as telegraph linesman stationed at Cheviot, was returning home from the Spotswood district, driving a departmental truck, when he collided with a sedan car driven by Mr A. D. Cooper, farmer, of the Spotswood district. The accident happened on the Main North road about miles north of Cheviot, the collision being almost head-on. Accompanying Mr Harry, were his wife, and his mother, and his six-year-old daughter, who received a broken arm, and a severe cut under the chin, necessitating the insertion of four stitches. The other occupants of the two vehicles, including a passenger in Mr Cooper's car, escaped with minor injuries only. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. Yesterday the injured child was making satisfactory progress. MACKENZIE A special meeting of the Mackenzie Domain Board was held in the public hall, the deputy-chairman, Mr J. T. Read, presiding. Others present were: Messrs A. McGiffert, D. McLaren, L. M. Gibson, and G. Telfer. The chairman reported that a number of coat hangers had been placed in the dress-ing-rooms behind the stage, and that a new lock had been put on the back door. The sub-committee's report in drawing up the secretarial duties was approved, and it was decided to invite applications for the position, applications to close on June 15, and that a special meeting be held on June 18 to deal, with the applications. Mr W. Petrie was reappointed caretaker at the same salary as formerly, with an allowance for scrubbing the various sections of the building at the prices agreed upon. The matter of supplying water for tne gas generator was left in the hands of Mr Read and Mr Telfer to attend to. The Cheviot County Council was granted free use of the hall for all functions when it was required for public purposes. Mr G. Telfer's action in arranging to have the trees in the botanic gardens reserve thinned was approved. Messrs G. Telfer, D. McLaren, and A. McGiffert were appointed to inspect the shingle In the reserve. TAI TAPU The first of a series of musical services was conducted in the Methodist Church, when the choir, under the leadership of Mr Griffiths, sang several anthems. The soloists were Mrs McLachlan and Mrs K. Peryman. Miss Ana Tobeck played the accompaniments. The address was given by the Rev. M. Ayrton, the subject being "Balaam, Considered as a Man of In* tegrity." At one of the series of weekly meetings that have been planned as part of the young people's gatherings at the Methodist Church, Tai Tapu, the newly-appointed minister, the Rev. M. Ayrton, introduced the subject of John Wesley, and some salient points in his career were given.

KAIAPOI A meeting of those interested in the formation at Kaiapoi of a platoon of the Canterbury Regiment was held in the Borough Hall on Wednesday evening. The Mayor (the Rev. W. H. A. Viekery) presided. Captain H. K. Kippenbergcr, of the First Canterbury Regiment, and Captain Murphy, of the New Zealand Permanent Staff, attended the meeting and explained the aims in forming a sub-branch in Kaiapoi to revive the volunteer movement. It was decided that a subbranch be formed, and the following officers were elected:—President, Mr H. Edwards; vice-presidents, Mr Viekery and Dr. Maxwell Ramsay: secretary and treasurer, Mr E. Price; executive committee, Messrs W. H. Stark, F. Richards, .T. Topp, and H. H. Bottrell. It was decided to hold a further meeting on June 6 to enroll members, and that application be made for the Borough Hall to be used as a drill hall. Lieutenant E. Lunn will be the officer commanding the Kaiapoi platoon The death occurred recently at Kaiapoi of Mrs Kenneth Mcintosh (nee Craig). She had from her early days been an ardent worker for the Presbyterian Church. Mrs Mcintosh arrived in New Zealand with her mother, the late Mrs Andrew Johnston, and a younger sister, in 1874, and lived at Allenton, Taieri, for seven years. In 1881 they came to Kaiapoi, where Mrs Mcintosh lived until her death. She was married to Mr Kenneth Mcintosh in 1891, and her death occurred on the forty-third anniversary of their wedding. She is survived by her husband, one daughter (Miss Hetty Mcintosh), and three sons (Messrs Gordon, Ken, and Alec). The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place at the Rangiorp Presbyterian Cemetery, the Rev. G. W. T. Hercus conducting a short service at the house, and also officiating at the graveside. The pall-bearers were:—Messrs James and Colin Mcintosh, William and George Stark, and Fred, and Ken. MARSHLAND Mr D. Goode presided at the monthly meeting of the Marshland School Committee. In his report, the headmaster said that the attendance had been seriously affected by the measles epidemic, but was now improving. Two new assistants. Misses M. Pollard and N. Thomas, had commenced duties. It was decided to vote a sum of money to buy readers for use in the school. A letter was received from the Canterbury Education Board asking for the school's cc-operation in the board's tree-planting scheme at New Brighton. It was decided to plant the allotted area. Mr Andrews was appointed visitor for the month. At the fortnightly card evening under the auspices of the school committee the prize-winners were Miss V. Quaid and Mr George Mallinson. Mr T. Gorinski (Preston's road) is on a holiday trip to Invercargill. A vote of sympathy with Mrs Berry in her illness was passed at the monthly meeting of the Marshland sub-branch of the Plunket Society. HORORATA There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of parishioners of St. John's Anglican Church, which was held in the Parish Hall. The balancesheet was considered satisfactory. The bazaar which was held during the year showed a net profit of £79. The vicar reported on the various activities of the church, and mentioned the various needs. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Bishop's warden, Mr T. D. Jarman; people's warden, Mr G. Grigg; vestry, Uessrs G. Hall, A. J. Harris, C. H. Ingram, R. G. Keith, R. S. F. Maffey, R. Pickering, H. M. Prestidge, J. R. Thome, and T. Tizzard. An interesting address was given by Dr. B. H. S. Alyward in the Hororata Hall on Wednesday evening on the Douglas credit movement. There was a moderate attendance, and it was decided to form a sub-branch in Hororata and to hold meetings monthly. The following will represent the Hororata Men's Hockey Club in a match with Sheffield, _at Sheffield to-morrow —H. A. Oliver, A. P. Tuer, E. Maffey, E. Dunn, P. Derrett, A. Ingram, R. Ballagh, R. Oliver, J. Williams, B. Shellock, and S. Russell. Emergencies: A. Jones and C. Gray. Cars will leave the store at 1.30 p.m.

HORNBY The committee of the Hornby Amateur Swimming Club met on Tuesday evening. Mr A. E. Grubb presided. A letter was received from Mr P. D. Paterson resigning from the committee owing to his departure from New Zealand for England. The secretary was instructed to write accepting the resignation and to wish Mr Paterson every success. Correspondence was read from the Hornby School Committee advising that it was prepared to pay the expenses incurred in moving the bath fence back, and asked that the club bear half the cost of piping the water-race, which was an essential part of the work. It was decided to reply stating that funds would not permit this expenditure at present. The secretary submitted a balancesheet for the annual ball, showing a profit of £4 Os Id. Bishop West-Watson will conduct a confirmation service at St. Saviour's Church, Templeton, next Sunday afternoon, and will preach at the evening service in St. Columba Church, Hornby, in the evening. HALSWELL Miss V. McConnell presided over a large attendance at the third meeting of the Halswell junior branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. Miss L. Dow was elected to plan the competition for the next meeting. It was reported that the anniversary of the s. nior branch would fall in June, and a play which the junior branch will stage at the celebration was rehearsed. It was announced that Mrs Parlane had offered a prize for the best woolly toy.

ISLINGTON The Hornby School Committee held a successful concert in the Islington Social Hall on Wednesday evening to augment the school funds. An outstanding programme was S' ven "J.
