New Zeaianders think of the United States as the home of slang, but Americans are just as amused by the characteristic slang of New Zealand. One of the things that interest Mrs Nancy Baker Tompkins, an American business woman who is on holiday in the South Island, is the difference between the colloquial language of the Dominion and her native country. When a New Zealander said that someone "did him well" lie meant that he had been treated well, but if an American used the same expression he would mean that he had been "rooked."
