REPRESENTATIVE CYCLIST HONOURED
FAREWELL TO MR FRANK GROSE Members of many sporting bodies met in the Papanui Memorial Hall last night to say good-bye to Mr Frank Grose, who has been picked to represent New Zealand at the Empire Games. Mr W. J. Boyce presided. Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P., said he was sure Mr Grose would be a worthy representative of the Dominion. He would gain much experience during his trip, which would be of benefit to the sport on his return. Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., said that Papanui could be regarded as the centre of cycling, and it was only right that the district should produce a champion to represent New Zealand. The deputy-chairman of the New Zealand Cycling Federation. Mr W. J. Walter, said that Mr Grose was one of the best all-round cyclists, riding with outstanding ability over all disMr J. Sturrock, representing the amateur side of the New Zealand Cycling Federation, said that Mr Grose's selection was popular all over j the Dominion, and he was sure that the confidence placed in Mr Grose would be worthily upheld. Other speakers included Messrs C. I N. Hamilton (president of the Canter - I bury Cycling Centre), J. Fantham (Papanui Rugby Football Club), C. G. 1 Derrett (Waimairi League Football Club), E. A. Jones (Papanui business men), A. Syme (Waimairi Tennis Club), R. G. Morrison (Papanui bowlers), D. Low (Harewood Hockey CJub), C. Hill (Papanui Cycling Club), C. Saundercock (Waikari Sports Club), R. Rickerby, and Dr. Guy Haskins. On behalf of the residents of Papanui, the chairman presented Mr Grose with a wallet.
