COLLECTIONS ON CITY STREETS

Allocation for Year

CITY COUNCIL'S DECISION

The allocation of dates for street collections in the city, a task which was referred to a sub-committee of the City Council, was discussed by the City Council at its meeting last night. The council did not agree entirely with the decisions of the committee, and it was requested to give further consideration to the ( allocation for December. The report of the sub-committee stated that in the arranging of street collections until the end of the present year the following allocation of dates had been decided upon:— Red Cross Association. Surf Assojciation, and British Sailors' Society, combined collection on May 23. i Canterbury Provincial Bands' Association, June 8. Young Men's Christian Association, July. ! Orphans' Day, August. Plunket Society, September 7. Salvation Army, October. [ Creche and Kindergarten Associ--1 ation, Society for the Protection of Women and Children, combined collection in November, j St. John Ambulance Association, December 7. Rotary Club for Christmas hampers, December 21. The report added that the Creche and Kindergarten Association and the Society for the Protection of Women and Children , were informed that a separate day could not be granted for each, but permission would be given for a collection to be taken up in November, the proceeds to be divided equally | The allocation completes the list for the year and no further applications can be considered. Cr. M. E. Lyons said he was loath to disagree with the decision of the committee, but he had hoped that two collections in December would be avoided. They were only a fortnight apart, and both were not long before Christmas. Cr. J. K. Archer said the committee had been unable to avoid two collections in December. The Rotary Club's appeal was not an ordinary one, and the public generally was very willing to assist. Cr. J. Mathison asked why two collections could not have been made for some other month, say July. He believed that the Rotary Club should have December for itself. The committee was requested to consider the clause again on the lines of Cr. Mathison's suggestions, and the committee was given power to act.
