April 23. j 1 Following on the recent case in ! which two showmen were convicted | for promoting an illegal wrestling contest at the Ngaruawahia regatta, a young man, Anthony Howley, appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., •in the Magistrate's Court at Humilton to-day, charged with engaging in a wrestling bout without a permit. He p'eaded not guilty. Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson stated that the showmen invited members of the public to enter the tent and wreptle one of the employees. Howley accepted the challenge, and ! engaged in a two-minute wrestling i bout. Th'srs were no falls, the bout, i resulting in a draw i Howley admitted engaging in the | bout. He adds 1 that Us was under tbs impression tbst he would get some I money If he won. He did not know I that wrestling was iUeggl. He reI ceived no payment whatever. He had i w.-estled before in gymnasiums at j Auckland, but never at side-shows. Defendant was convicted and disI charged.
