OBITUARY

MRS J. BOOTH

Mrs Margaret Ann Booth, the wife of Mr John Booth, a well-known member of the congregation of the Holy Trinity Church, Avonside, died yesterday, at the age of 70 years. Mrs Booth was born at Enniski'len, Six Counties, Ireland, and lived for most of her life in Ireland, coming to New Zealand in 1922. Mrs Booth's maiden name was Simpson and her grandparents were among the'earliest settlers in Canterbury. She was married in 1891 in Dublin, where she and her family lived until she came to New Zealand in 1922. Mr Booth left Ireland in the following year and the family went to Avonside. Five of Mrs Booth's sons and daughters are living in New Zealand. They are Miss Olive Booth (Christchurch), Mrs F. Simpson (West Coast), Mrs W G. Stevenson (Wellington), Miss P. Booth (Christchurch), and Mr J. J. Booth (Auckland). Three other children are living abroad.

MRS CORNELIUS VANDERBILT

The death has occurred of Mrs Cornelius Vanderbilt, sen., aged 89. widow of the railway magnate and financier, who died in 1899. He was a grandson of Commodore Vanderbilt. who laid the foundation of one of the greatest American fortunes. Mrs Vanderbilt was the recognised leader of New York society a generation ago, but in recent years had been an invalid, and lived as a recluse.

Mrs Darvil Poulton was hostess at a very pleasant party held at her home, "Worlingham," West Eyrcton, in honour of Miss Janice Blunden, whose marriage will take place on Thursday. Bowls of autumn-tinted chrysanthemums decorated the drawing-room, where the guest of honour received many good wishes, and attractive gilts of linen. BASKETBALL CLUB'S DANCE

Many visitors were present at a dance, arranged by members of the Prebbleton Basketball Club, and held in the Prebbleton Hall on Saturday evening.
