SI'MNER i A meeting of the Sumner Borough I Council was held last evening, when ; there were present: The Mayor (Mr '. Vf H. Nicholson i. Crs. G. F. Allen, H. | E.' Kennett, C. Hart. H. L. Wiggins, | and A. Holden. The gas and electrical engineer (Mr A. A. Cheshire) reported that the gas nuriflers at Rangiora had now been dismantled and were ready for carting to Sumner. The approximate weight was 21 tons, and quotations for removal were being obtained from the Railway Department, a Rangiora carrier, and a local carrier. Several of the poles in McCormack s Bay carrying the 11,000-volt lines were reported to be in poor condition and several new ones would be required. Heavier poles for Moncks Spur together with several spares, would be required at the following cost:—McCormack's Bay, • £32; Monck's Spur, £4O; Sumner-Redchffs flat replacements, £33. An application from the bt. John Ambulance Association for a grant Was deferred until the next meeting. It was decided to convert the borough's loans. The Mayor stated that the annual accounts showed that there was £I6OO / iD the district funds and the position /' oi s the general account had improved '■ "iisiderably. Subject to audit, it could safely be said that the trading and all the other accounts were in a very, satisfactory position; better in fact, than for many years. All the borough services had been well maintained, and improvements had been carried out. particularly in the gas and electrical departments. In the water department money was at present being spent to improve this service. The total expenditure, was well within the estimate for the year and had been kept well within bounds, while the receipts were slightly in excess of j the estimates. ; NKW BRIGHTON The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor. Mr E. A. M. Leaver, presiding. There were also present: Crs. R. E. Holloway, W. Hulme. T. E. Thomson J. K. Worrall, W L A. Taylor, J. Orsborn, A. E. Lawrv, and W. E. Wilkins. . The Mayor reported that he had received a letter from the New Brighton sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association asking why it had not been consulted about the Anzac Dav commemoration service. The Mayor stated that the arrangements had been made on exactly me same lines as in former years. The services had been inaugurated by the then Mavor on behalf of the council and citizens some eight or nine years ago. and he resetted, that any criticism should occur en the eve of this year's observar.ui cf Anzac Day. The service had be • i held long before the sub-branch hai come into existence. He had never been approached by that organisation with reference to any suggestion of -..'orttrol or change in the arrangements. It was decided to reply to the subbranch on the lines of the Mayor's statement. The chairman of works, the chairman of finance, and the overseer (Mr J. Wilson) were appointed tc investigate and report on the reorganisation of relief work gangs and the advisability of appointing extra gangers with a view to exercising stricter supervision. The chairman of works and the overseer were appointed to meet members of the New Brighton Croquet Club to discuss the formation of new greens. The Mayor was asked to try to make some arrangement with the Henthcote County Council for joint representation on the Christchurch Domains Bo.ard. The council is not entitled to one representative on the board, as its annual contribution is less than £SO. A complaint from the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association that unsightly additions had been made to the Memorial Hall byboarding up the separate bays was left m the hand:,' of the Mayor and Cr. Thomson to report to the next meeting of the standing committee. It was agreed to advise the South Brighton Progress League that the footpaths in Estuary road would be attended to as opnorttlnity offered, and that the channefs in South Brighton were being attended to. Consideration of applications by the Waimairi Beach Progress League and the South New Brighton Tennis Club for extra lighting and of the lighting in Jubilee avenue and Berry street was deferred pending the preparation of the estimates. The Mayor was appointed the council's delegate to a meeting of the Christchurch Dairymen's Association, to be held to-day to consider present"ig a bill to Parliament asking that a milk control council be formed for Christchurch on similar lines to that operating in Auckland. The chairman of reserves (Cr. Uwry) reported that several sites had oecn found that would be suitable for a nursery, but that no recommendation would be made pending a furner inspection of sites.
