SOUTH ISLAND MOTORS LTD. 145.147 ARMAGH STREET, CHRISTCHURCH (ANZAC SQUARE, DUNEDIN) "PANTING PATRICIA" AN EPIC OF BREEDING In answer to a challenge that a 30-year-old twin-cylinder 10 h.p. "WOL SELEY" could not be driven from Sydney to Melbourne (565 miles) with in 48 hours, three members of the Victorian Light Car Club, in Me««r« A. E. Bedford, H. Drake-Richmond and R. 11. Lohn, have decided to attempt the feat at an early date. The " old bus" is to take part in the Veteran Car Run to be held in Melbourne during " Motorist Week," but before then " Panting; Patricia" is try' be shipped to Sydney to tackle the Inter-State run. If the "old lady" makes the .iourney within the stipulated time, the wager is that the Melbourne Hospital will benefit to the extent of £IOO. This proposed exploit brings to mind a wonderful achievement by a little 65 h.p. single-cylinder chain driven " WOLSELEY " Car, which was driven by Mrs B. Thompson, of Adelaide, in the historic Dunlop Reliability MotorCar Contest from Sydney to Melbourne, in February. 1905, over 29 years ago. In those days, a motor drive between two capitals was an adventure and no mean job for a male crew, yet Mrs Thompson, at the wheel herself, succeeded in reaching Melbourne in good time, a task that proved beyond many more powerful cars. In view of the forthcoming effort by " Panting Patricia" to make the Syd-ney-Melbourne run in 48 hours, it will be of interest to mention that Mrs Thompson's aggregate driving time for this journey in 1905, over some hundreds of miles of atrocious bush tracks, was 46hrs 37mins. Considering what cars were like in those days, it was a really great effort with a small "one lunger."
