RAILWAY FREIGHT TRAFFIC

Freight truflic on the railways has been very heavy during the last week, particualrly on the Lyttelton lino, the port having been busily engaged in loading and discharging several overseas and coastal vessels. At_ present two overseas vesses are loading, and a third, the Elmbunk. with phosphates, is expected 10-day. while a number of smaller coastal vessels arc cither loading or discharging. There was a decrease in the amount of freight passing through the Otira tunnel compared with the previous week, but a considerable increase over the same week last year. Last week a total of 0912 tons passed through the tunnel, compared with 11,413 tons in the previous week. Last year the corresponding figures were 7994 tons and 3239 tons.
