REBUILDING WATERLOO BRIDGE

The London County Council's decision to pull down Waterloo Bridge and rebuild a structure to accommodate six Jincs of vehicular traffic, provided that (50 per cent, of the cost is granted from the road funds, has been rebuffed by the Hon. Oliver Stanley, Minister for Transport. who has written to the council pointing out that he cannot make a grant to assist a scheme which runs contrary to Parliament's opinion. He is not prepared to urge Parliament to alter its opinion of 1932, when it declined by 222 votes to 154 to permit the demolition of the bridge. The old council then planned to recondition it.
