MANY CALVES KILLED IN FREE STATE
TOO MUCH VEAL TO USE BOUNTY PLAN TO REDUCE NUMBER OK CATTLE CORK, April 21. A rush to secure a Government bounty of 10s each on calfskins led to the wholesale slaughter of calves. The market is glutted with veal and people refuse to eat it. Hundreds of ' carcases are being dumped in old quarries. Veal is selling for a few pence in some centres, while in others it is being distributed free to the poor. English prices are depressed, so many buyers in London are advising that supplies should be withheld. Yet the amazing slaughter continues unabated, often being cruelly bungled. Hammers and even 'stones are being used to kill the animals. The Minister for Agriculture wants 200.000 calves to be slaughtered in order to reduce the number of cattle. From this originated the bounty scheme.
