METHVEN

The third birthday party o£ the Methven Women's Institute took place in the Anglican Sunday School room. when more than 100 members were present. Representatives from Lyndhurst, Lauriston, and Barr Hill Institutes were present and on behalf of members Mrs J. F. Stone (past president), welcomed the delegates, as well as Mrs E. Vaughan, the newly-elected president of the Methven Institute, and hoped that she would have a successful term of office. Votes of sympathy were passed to Mesdames Waddington, Penny, Johns, and Miss Ida Bland, who are ill. The prerjdent, Mrs R. A. Grigg Cdelegate) gave an outline of proceedings at the recent conference of institutes held at Geraldine. Items were given by Mrs R. F. Smith (piano solo), and Mrs G. Callaghan (songs). A short farce was contributed by Mrs J. Temple, Misses Shona Mauger, and Laura Watson. An amusing item "A Silent Concert" was given, with Mrs Ken. Aitken as the hostess. Mesdames F. Shearer, F. Suckling, A. Titheridge, Misses Mona Hampton, Betty Chambers. Kitty Beary. and Shona Mauger as guests. A duet was contributed by Mesdames L. L. Richards and J. Temple. Mrs A. S. Kennedy acting as accompanist. The principal item of the afternoon was the cutting of the birthday cake by the president, Mrs Vaughan. The cake was made by Mrs S. Smith and iced by Mr F. A. Anderson. The prizes won during the year for the aggregate in competitions were presented as follows: —Mrs K. Aitken 1. Miss G. Morgan 2. Mesdames A. J. Penny and A. Lawrence 3 equal. Several competitions were decided as follows:—Bag bursting, Mrs F. Shearer; peanut race, Mrs A. C. Watson: peanut chase by named teams. "Cats" team. Good support was accorded to the sale of mystery parcels, £1 12s being added to the funds. The hostesses were the members of the outgoing committee. STAVELEY

The annual meeting of the Staveley Women's Institute was held in the hall. The president. Mrs A. W. Russell, being in the chair. A demonstration of making bouquets was given by Mrs Glennie (Ashburton). A competition lor the best kettle-holder resulted as follows:—Mrs A. W. Wright 1, Mrs B. Robinson 2, Mrs C. Timpson, sen.. 3. A thrift stall was in charge oC Mrs A. R Andrews. Miss B. Cunningham gave pianoforte items during afternoon tea. The hostesses were Mesdamcs C. Timpson, G. McFarlane. C. N. Totty. J. Scott, and Miss A. Totty. The annual report stated that the year had been successful and there had been an increase in membership. There was a small credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs A. W. Russell; vice-president, Mrs A. R. Andrews; secretary. Mrs W. Norman: assistant-secretary, Miss E. Christiansen; treasurer. Miss B. Cunningham; committee, Mesdames S. T. Goldsmith. G. Durran. C. N. Totty, L. H. Hicks, and G. L. Button.

STL I> HOLME There was a large attendance at the sixth birthday party of the Studholme Women's Institute, which was held in the Nukuroa Hall. A very interesting playette. "The Shy Young Student," and also an early Victorian dance, in full dress costume and wigs, was given by members of the social half-hour committee. Prizes were distributed as follows:—Light fruit cake competition: Mrs Borthwick 1, Mrs Taylor 2. Mrs H. Rollinson and Mrs H. Hayman ~ (equal). Best autumn flower: Miss J. Kippenberger 1. Mrs F. Saunders 2, and Mrs H. Hayman 3. Special bloom, winners for the year: Mrs W. Taylor (16 points) 1. Mrs G. Murray <7 points) 2 Mrs Cox. Mrs Kippenberger and Mrs Hayman (6 points') 3 (equal).-Compe-tition winners for the year were:—Mrs H Hayman (16 points') 1. Mrs Rollinson sen (10 points) 2. Mrs H. Rollinson' <9 points) 3. The afternoon tea hostesses were:—Mesdames Kelly. Wilson, Kippenberger, Bell, and Hyam. The birthday cake was made by Mrs Skclton and iced by Mrs E. Rollinson. Mrs Kippenberger cut the cake and also gave an interesting reading on the first Women's Institute. RANGITIRA VALLEY Mrs Talbot presided at the monthly meeting of the Rangitira Valley Women's Institute, held at the residence of Mrs S. G. McCulleugh. A welcome was extended to visitors from the Pleasant Point and Waitohi institutes. Mrs Cartwrignt, of Pleasant Point, gave an interesting demonstration on the covering of an umbrella and the patching of boys' trousers. The competition, in exhibiting a pot o! preserved fruit, was judged by Mesdames Cartwright and Cunningham. Mrs Kennedy being the winner, with Mrs Davey second. The hostesses were Mrs Hartnett and Miss Goodman. WAITOHI At the monthly meeting of the Waitohi Women's Institute, Mrs Sewell presided. Mrs Doherly was appointed to lay a wreath on the Waitohi memorial on Anzac Day. Miss R. Sewell submitted a report of the conference at Geraldine. An interesting demonstration on rug making was given by Mrs G. A. Davey, Rangitira Valley. A prize for the best programme for the year was won by Mrs J. Lyon and Miss G. Moore, first equal, with Miss F. Parish third. A competition, tearing an eicphant out of a sheet of paper, caused much amusement, and resulted: Mrs Nolan 1. Miss Parish 2, Mrs Davey 3. The hostesses were Mrs Nolan and Misses F. Parish, J. Sewell, and K. Lyon.
