LEESTOX A'- the monthly meeting o: the I.ceston Women's Institute, over which 7-liss A. Pprkin presided, Mrs Couch, voluntary organiser, gave an interesting address on the origin and history . f the first institute. She was thanked. A vote of sympathy ■was passed to Mr Ashby in the loss t>f his sister, Mrs Orion. An appeal for the district nurse fund was made. A letter from East Bridgford. the institute's link in England, was read, and a calendar from there also was on view. The important feature of the afternoon's programme was a refresher talk by Mrs Williams, followed by a talk about the Dominion federation by Mrs Chisnall, both of whom the members followed with interest. Mrs Williams referred to ihc exhibition by women's Institutes to be held in Timaru in June, at which an antique section would form a prominent part. A vote of thanks was.' passed to Mrs Williams and Mrs Chisnall for their talks and for judginy the competitions, in which there were a large number of entries. The competitions resulted:—An economical household bag, Mrs F. Reid (bag from motor tube) 1, Mrs Mackenzie • laundry bag), and Mrs Hibbs i shopping bag), equal, 2, Mrs F. The monthly meeting of the Washdyke Women's Institute was held in the Washdyke Hall, Miss E. Cart-wright presiding. A grant was made to the hall committee for'the use of the hall. The competitions resulted as follows: Article from one yard of Britway: Class A, Miss Daeling; class B, Miss E. Cartwright; best cabbage. Mrs Hansen. Miss Ramsay was appointed to take charge of "Home and Country" for the year. Mrs Jackson gave an interesting demonstration of making paper flowers and handwork. Many Jim shed articles were exhibited. AKOWHENL'A j At the monthly meeting of the Avo- ; V.henua Women's Institute, a welcome was extended to visitors from the Tcmuka and Pleasant Point Institutes. The competitions, judged by Mesdames T E. Shiels and Kyne, resulted: Vegetable bouquet. Mrs Manning 1, Mrs M. Walker 2; something made out of a record, Mesdames C. Taipana 1, G. Kangi and T. Shaw, equal, 2. A demonstration of making paper flowers was given by the president. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames K. Rehu. C. Manning. C. Taipana, and Miss M. Walker. TINWALI) The Tinwald Women's Institute met recently. Mrs H. Houston presided. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs O. Christie, in a recent bereavement. A "bring and buy" stall, under the charge of Mesdames A. Mclnnes and W. Lundy, did good business. Mrs T. Wilson gave a demonstration on making paper flowers, which were afterwards sold. The making of shaving cream was demonstrated by Miss L. Wilson. A report was read on the recent federation meeting at Geraldine. Competitions, judged by Mrs D. Rankin, resulted as follows:—Bran biscuits dl): Mivs A. Mclnnes 1, Miss C. Hampton 2; neatest darned sock (9>: Miss Mclnnes 1, Miss K. Sewell 2. Musical items were contributed by Misses P. CJark and J. and P. Robertson. The hostesses were Mesdames J. RofTey, A. C'olville, A. Carroll, and A. Wilson. HAMPSTEAI) At the monthly meeting of the Hampstead Women's Institute, Mrs W. H. Miller presided. There was a good attendance. Mrs J. H. Smith and Mrs E. 11. Childs were appointed delegates to Wakanui birthday, and Mesdames K. McEachen, A. J. Ching, W. J. Miller, and Miss O. Tinker to Ashburton birthday party. It was decided to hold a social afternoon in aid of funds. A report of the annual conference of the South Canterbury Federation was given by the delegates (Mesdames Smith and Miller). Members were reminded of the first meeting of the play reading circle, and Mrs G. T. Clarke and Miss O. Tinker were appointed joint conveners. Mrs H. G. Flatman was appointed delegate to the annual conference, to be held in Wellington in July. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs H. J. Constable for her work on the social committee during the last two years. Mrs K. Vincent gave an interesting demonstration on articles made from used motor tubes, and exhibited a varied assortment of toys j;nd bags. A number of books were received for the library. A competition wf naming articles on a tray resulted in Mesdames Constable and Paterson being equal first, and Mrs Coward and Miss MacMillan, equal, second. A competition on making skin gloves resulted in Mrs Penman being placed first. Mrs W. Kerr second, and Miss J. MacMillan third. A competition for tomato sauce was won by Mrs F. Rose, Mrs A. J. Ching being second, and Mrs E. H. Childs third. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Vincent. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. Knight, S. Groves. H. W. Cooke, and Moffat!, and Miss Simpson.
