CARNIVAL AT ALLENTON

The carnival organised by the Allenlon Sports Club and school committee in aid of the funds of both bodies was concluded on Saturday evening when there was a good attendance at the school. The proceeds totalled £ll7. It is estimated that less than £lO will cover the expenses. The final figures will not be known until after the crowning of the successful queen in the triangular queen carnival contest next Saturday evening. Infectious Diseases A case of diphtheria and two carriers all of the same household, were notified in the Ashburton borough durinr last week. A case of scarlet fever was also reported from the Watcrton district. These are the first cases of this nature to be reported for several monthsColdstream Road Board Nominations for seats on the Coldstream Road Board do not exceed the vacancies, and the following have been returned as members:—Messrs John W. Dell, John C. Guinness, William McKcage, Derek S. Studholmc, George Tail. Train Delayed A hot box on one of the carriages of the south express on Saturday morning delayed the train at Ashburton for about 10 minutes. Tcrspnal The Rev. L. A. Day, of Opawa Baptist Church, conducted the services at the Ashburton Baptist Church yesterday. The Rev. E. W. Batts took the services at Opawa: An/ac Church Services A special Anzac service was held at the Baring Square Methodist Church last evening by the Rev. G. B. Hinton, who made reference to the National Memorial and the Unknown Warriors' tomb. Mr Hinton also called the roll of tlie: men connected with the church who died in the Great War. "Last Post" was sounded by Mr T. Bees.

At the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church the Rev. R. S. Watson made special reference at. both morning and evening services to the significance of Anzac.

Road Board Inspection An inspection of the roads in the Wakunui Road Board's district was made by board members on Saturday. The roads were considered to be in satisfactory order, generally, but it was: noted that the gorsc nuisance was much in evidence m some parts of the district. It was decided to take (lie necessary steps to have t'hc roadsides cleared, as in many places the growth of gorse and broom is proving a hindrance to trallic. The work of road maintenance and grading for the season will be commenced this month. Bowls The Ashburlon Bowling Club closed its season on Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance. The rinks and pairs championships were decided, and friendly games were played. In the rinks competition. Bond (sub.), Sawle, Cookson, Milsom (s) beat J. W. Smith (sub.), David, Minogue, McLachlan (s). Milsom (sub.) and Minogue beat Dunn and Mactier in the final of the.' pairs. Both the deciding games were full f.f interest, and were won by a narrow margin.

The following events were completed during last week: —Handicap pairs, Todd and McElhinney beat Smith and Dunlop. Handicap Singles—Eastcrbrook beat Tulloch. Colts—rutton beat Dakcvs.

i Women's Hockey i ! A friendly match was plaved between the High School Old Girls' Hockey Club and a team from the school, Old Girls winning by 10 goals to 2. Miss M. Henderson was the referee. RAKAIA The annual football match between the town and country members of the Rakaia Football Club for Ihe Fox Cup was played on the domain on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for (lie country team by 8 points to 3. The game was a ragged one, neither side showiiif; much combination, although there were several good individual efforts. For the country, Davison scored a try, which he converted, and Bchrns kicked a penalty goal. For the town M., O'Reilly kicked a penalty goal. Mr T. Beckett was the referee. STAVELEY The monthly meeting of the Staveley branch of the Mothers' Union was held at the home of Mrs L. H. Hicks, Bushside. Mrs E. A. Osmers, Methven, presided and read the second paper on the call to renewal..
