OBITUARY
MUS HARRIET (GATES The death has occurred of Mrs Harriet Coales, one of the Canterbury pilgrims who came to New Zealand on the First Four Ships in 1850. Mrs Coales was the wife of the late Canon Coates. She was a daughter of Mr William Guise Brittan. Mrs Coates was in her eighty-eighth year. She was four years of age when she arrived in Lyttelton with her parents on the George Seymour, and she lived most of her life in Canterbury. In 1881 she married Canon Coates, who was then the Rev. Coates, vicar of Waimnte. After living at Waimatc Mr and Mrs Coates went to the Holy Trinity parish Lyttelton, where they remained for 21 years. Canon Coates died nine years ago.
Mrs Coates was one of a family of five. Her eldest brother was Mr W. G. Brittan, and her second brother, the Rev. F. G. Brittan, of St. Albans, who is the only remaining member of the family. She had two sisters, Mrs T. Foster, who was headmistress at the Christchurch Girls' High School, and Miss Ellen Brittan. She leaves one son and two daughters—Mr C. Carlyon Coates, Mrs J. PI. Upham. and Miss Monica Coates, all of whom are living in Christchurch.

| The management committee of the South Brighton gala which was held on New Year's Day under the auspices of the South Brighton Progress League, entertained those who assisted in the gala at a dance . n Saturday evening. The Bridge Street Hall was profusely decorated with Chinese lanterns, greenery, and streamers, and the music was supplied by Lcthaby's orchestra. The committee in charge of the arrangements was Messrs J. S. Ainsworth, C. Sawtell, F. Woodward, If. Robinson, R. Campbell, G. Hartman, and Mrs C. Sawtell.
The guests were welcomed by Mr Ainsworth, who congratulated the workers on the; successful result of their endeavours.
Items were given by Messrs F. Woodward. F. Kitchingham, and G. Hartman. Accompaniments were played by Mrs L. Chamberlain. The lucky-spot dance was won by Mr and Mrs J. Chegwin, and the Monte Carlo fox trot by Mrs F. Woodward and Mr R. L. Robinson. Those present included Mcsdames H. Robinson, J. S. Ainsworth, F. Woodward. C. Sawtell, R. Campbell. A. C. Clements. D.
