THE UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT

TEAMS FROM THE FOUR COLLEGES VISITORS TO ARRIVE ON THURSDAY Since 1929 Christchurch residents have not witnessed that combination of a first-class sports meeting and gay revelry—the inter-university Easter tournament. The visiting teams from the other university colleges will arrive on Thursday night and Friday morning. Last year Canterbury was to have been the host, but waived this right in view of the jubilee celebrations at Atckland University College, where the tournament was finally held. The combined forces of the visitors will number about 180, added to which there will be the usual camp-followers who accompany the teams to lend their moral support during the contests. A reception will be accorded to the new arrivals at the railway station by an entertainment party consisting of 60 Canterbury College students.

Commencing on the Saturday morning the students will present a full programme which includes lawn tennis, athletics, basketball, boxing, swimming, nad rowing. Shooting teams fired on their home ranges on Saturday last, and their results, though not announced yet, will be counted in the award of the tournament shield.

Apart from the host of private dances arranged for the visitors there will be official entertainments throughout Easter, commencing with a welcome bv Canterbury College 'on Friday afternoon. A motor drive on Sunday afternoon over the Port Hills to Lyttelton. via Governor's Bay, will give new-comers to Canterbury an opportunity to see something of the city and the plains, but the culminating point of the celebrations will be the ball, on Tuesday night. Trophies Few sports meetings are so richly endowed with trophies as the interuniversity tournament, and competition will be correspondingly keen. Above all others ranks the Tournament Shield at present held by the Canterbury students, who last year won it by a big margin of points. In athletics, tennis, swimming, and rowing, the trophies were won by Canterburv College last year, and A. T Anderson and F. H. Stephenson tied for the Ladies' Cup for athletics. But these will not be retained without a serious effort," even though the local teams are unusually strong, and efforts will have to be made to restore Canterbury's prestige in boxing, shooting, and basketball. Otago has held the boxing shield repeatedly, while Victoria won the other tw:i classes last year. The local students have made a far better showing already in practices, and may reasonably'hope for better results this year.
