THE SINGAPORE BASE
Increase in EstimateNO THREAT TO ANY NATION oskii imi >'Tvu !ai. vii;r.i.r.>-0 (Received March 20. 5.5 p.m.) RUGBY, March 10. During a discussion in the House of Commons on the navy estimates the subject of the naval base at Singapore was raised. The provision of .C 714.000 has been allocated in the estimates for this work. Replying to questions. Captain Euan Wallace, Civil Lord of the Admiralty, said that the recent conference attended by distinguished admirals and others which had been held at Singapore had no relation whatever to the increase in the estimate of the cost of the work. The idea that the creation of a naval base at Singapore was a threat to any nation was a mere delusion. It might as well be said that the base at Dcvonport was a threat to America. When the money in the estimate was spent Great Britain would have an adequate base, properly equipped and defended.
