WOOLSTON RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION
A meeting of the YVoolston Ratepayers' Association was held on Monday evening. Mr B. T. Turner presided. A letter v.-as received from the Christchurch Drainage Board advising that the work of improving the banks of the Heathcote river would be continued as requested, as long as unemployment relief labour was available. The Christchurch Beautifying Association wrote inviting the appointment of delegates to attend a meeting to be held in the Chamber of Commerce Library Room on Monday, April 9. It was unanimously decided to accept the invitation. In view of the enthusiasm shown regarding the meeting, it was decided to send a larger delegation than usual. Messrs B. T. Turner, E. L. Hills, E. F. Butler, E. J. Hills, A. E. Milne, and J. M. Bain were elected delegates. The secretary, Mr E. L. Hills, reported that lie had received a great many complaints from residents regarding the smell and smoke being emitted from a certain works in the district. It was said that the nuisance was considerably worse than a month ago. A re.-ident wrote complaining about the noise created by the fan at the Davis Gelatine Works, and asked what could be done regarding remedying the noise. The • secretary was instructed to reply that certain steps were being taken by the company to minimise the noise. If tlvj'e wire unsatisfactory from the residents' point of view, it might bo necessary to take legal action. A proposal to organise a mass demonstration iof residents to prote-t against living in a polluted atmosphere was held over in the meantime.
