KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Kaiapoi Borough Council mel last night- Present: The Mayor (the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery), Crs. A. E. Brown, C. M. Williams, J. Hirst, F. Thorne, J. W. Barnard. H., Rinaldi, E. Gray J. D. Williams, and A. Linklatcr. The secretary of the Kaiapoi Unemployed Workers' Union wrote asking if Ihe council would use its influence with the Unemployment Board to obtain payment of relief wages stopped from two of (he union members who were absent as a deputation to Mr R. T. Bailey. It was decided to support a recommendation to the Kaiapoi Unemployment Committee that the men be paid for one day. The secretary of the St. John Ambulance Association. Christchurch. wrote asking if the council would make a grant towards the association's invalid transport work for 1934. It was decided that the matter be considered when drawing up the annual estimates. Messrs Paupnll, Son, and Corcoran wrote forwarding an application from Mr F. Thorne under the Urban Farm Land Rating Act, 1932, for the preparation of a farm-land list for the borough. It was decided to reply that the letter would receive consideration by "he council. The director of the Kaiapoi Technical classes wrote asking for financial assistance towards the continuation of the classes for the coming year. Consideration was deferred until the time for drawing up the estimates.
The acting-secretary of the Kaiapoi Beautifying Association wrote advising that owing to lack of public support the association was unable to continue paying the gardener's wages and that unless further support was forthcoming it would be necessary to terminate the employment of the .gardener on March 31. The cost of upkeep of the various plots and gardens administered by the association was £240 per annum, of which £195 represented the gardener's wages. The association assured the council of its co-operation in any scheme brought forward. A deputation from tho association waited on the council urging immediate consideration of the position. It was decided to call a public meeting in the Borough Hall on Tuesday next to consider the financial position and the strengthening of the association. Cr. Gray was appointed the council's representative to a conference of local bodies in Christchurch on April 11 to consider the finances of the St. John Ambulance Association. The financial statement showed receipts since last meeting £2549 7s fid, and a credit balance of .C2(> Os 2d. Accounts passed for payment totalled £095 15s lid. Applications were received from Messrs R. Taylor. J. H. Taylor, and C. A. Yarcoe for a 20 per rent, reduction of rent paid for seasicic reserves for 1933. It was decided lo advice the applicants that their application:, were too late. It was decided to make an urgent application to the Valuation Department for a revaluation oi the borough. It was decided that tiie reserves committee should make an inspection of the borough's reserves at Dromore. It was decided that tenders be called for reletting the cemetery reserve for a term of five years.
