CHRISTCHURCH FRENCH CIRCLE

1 ANNUAL JIKKTINi; i The annual meeting ot the French circle was hold at Canterbury Col- , logo on Friday, at. 8 p.in., with Air White in the chair. There were 15 ! members present. The annual report showed that ■while the eirele had been revived only tenta- ; tively at the beginning of 1D33, the' year had been a very successful one, ano results fully justified the efforts made. During the year there were seven ordinary meetings, with an average attendance cf 15. the meetings being held at the homes of different members who were hostesses for those evenings. The two other meetings wore special occasions, one for the celebration of the fete nationale on the anniversay of the fall of the Bastille, and the other (or the purpose of saying farewell to Professor Blunt, who was for several years president of Ihe eirele. The oral French examination was . held in July, about 30 candidates, representing most of the secondary schools of C'hristchurch, being examined. The prizes for this examination were distributed on July 11. Sympathetic reference was made to the death of Mr George Humphrey.--, who had been patron of the circle

since its inception, and who had always shown a genuine and kindly interest in its activities. It was decided that owing to the increase in membership, the circle .should have a permanent meeting place once more; that there should be a subscription of 5s a member <to include subscription to the French circle library), and that meetings be held .once every three weeks on Wednesdays if possible.
