THE RETURNED SOLDIERS

QUARTERLY MEETING OF MEMBERS Aa account of its stewardship for the last three months was given by the executive at the quarterly meeting of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association last night, and other matters of interest to returned men were discussed. The president (the Rev. F. T. Read) was in the chair, and there was a good attendance. Benevolent Cases The president reported that for the months of November, December, and January, 1030 cases had been assisted it a cost of £lO6 9s sd. In addition Christmas cheer P a »f to 498 men at a cost of £224 18s, bd. He regretted that the benevolent committee had not been able to do more but every case was carefully considered and treated as generously as possible. The committee had done its best. Unemployment Committee On behalf of the unemployment committer Mr R. M. Grant paid a tribute fo the work the president had done on behalf of returned men, and he also referred to the excellent work done bv the executive, particularly Mr u. Fleck During the last three months, 1172 davs' work on a subsidy basis, at a cost" of £3G3 17s sd, was found, and 244 davs' work without subsidy had also been provided. Six men had been nlaced in permanent employment. He also stated that of a membership of approximately 2000, CSO men were unCn Mr°C C Chisnall, the unemployment officer spoke of the cases that had to Ibe provided for. Many of the men, he .-aid could do only very light work, "but 'it was sometimes hard to find suitable work for them. Other Committees. Mr Fleck referred to the improvements that had been made to the club premises during the year, and Mr G. Dabourne spoke of the work of the social commiltee. Mr W. E. Leadley =aid (hat the suburban committees had done good work throughout the year, and were in a healthy condition In answer to a member, Mr Fleck said he could not say at present how much had been spent on the clubrooms, but two-thirds of it had been spent on labour which was paid standard rates of pay. Not at any time had cheap labour been employed.

General In accordance with his notice of motion, Mr Norman Dale moved: "That in future, candidates for election be empowered to appoint their own scrutineers." The motion was lost on a show of hands, after a brief discussion. The following motion was carried:— "That this meeting of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association views with regret, the action of the Government in allocations of profits from art unions to sports bodies, when necessitous cases among returned soldiers demand attention."

SI YINKK-RhDCLIKI'.S SI'BBRAM H Mi H. Meyer presided over a meetiir; of the Sumner-Rcdclifis subbranch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. The proposal to hold a gala at Easter time was fully discussed. It was agreed to approach the proprietors of tin- ferris wheel and the mcrry-go-ronnd with a view to finding whether their gear would be available for Easter Saturday and Monday. The following list ol attractions was agreed upon:--Afternoon tea tent, platform concert parly, a programme of sports on the beach, a treasure hunt, and a baby siiow. It was also decided to hold a beauty contest on lines similar to those recently held at New Brighton. Il was reported that a d; -putat ion consisting of representatives Irnm the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, the Ladies' Auxiliary, and the .Siiinner-RcdclilTs sub-branch. had waited on the Sumner Borough Council tf> lay out their plans for space and to ask the council's igrmission to hold the gala at Easier time. The council had appeared sympathetic to the proposals and had reported that it would go carefully into the matter and make a definite oiler regarding the spaces considered most suitable for the occasion. H was decided to ask the council to appoint representatives on the gala committee. It was agreed that if permission were granted, a number of .-ide shows in charge of members of the association and their friends should be erected at both ends of the main beach.

PAF'ANUI SCHOOL j MKKTINt; OF COMMITTEE j I A meeting of the Papanui School i Committee was hold on Monday evenins, Mr L. Claridge presiding. The headmaster, Mr W. G. Cartwright, reported that Miss Paynter, Miss Foote, Miss Harrison, and Mr McFcdrics had been appointed to the teaching staff. Miss Harrison was relieving and Miss Pavnter had been transferred from the Shirley School | under the scheme for giving work to j unemployed teachers. The roll num- j bcr was 224. | A decision to acquire a tenuis court j was reached and authority for the purchase of the necessary "laterials i was given. \ Card Social anil Dance The committee held a card social and dance in the school on Saturday j evening, the winners at cards beitig i Mrs Farrell and Mis Fanthcm. The ! lucky spot waltz was won by Miss i D. Gee and Mr E. Fielding and Hip ! Monte Carlo one-step by Miss K i Sniallcy and Mr McLoom. Music was supplied by Messrs T. i Mayne, Colin Brown, and F. Wallace. Mr J. Cains was master of ceremonies.

SYDENHAM Those present at the February meeting of the Sydenham School Committee were: Messrs J. G. Brown (chairman), G. H. Bishop, H. M. Fletcher, H. W. Drewcry, A. Milne, J. H. Pratt, T. Trcnberth, and W. A. Webb. The chairman referred to the illness of the headmaster (Mr Rumbold), and members expressed their sympathy. Correspondence was received from the Canterbury Education Board stating that various repairs and renovations had been carried out. It was decided to forward thanks to the board for the work. The number of children on the roll for the commencement of the year was 892. The visiting committee reported that everything was in order. The whole of the grounds were tar-sealed. Special mention was made of the efficient work of the caretaker. It was decided to hold the picnic on Thursday, March 8, at the Riccarton racecourse, and a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Brown, Pratt, and Bishop, was appointed to make arrangements. Messrs Bishop and Fletcher were appointed a visiing committee for the month.
