BOROUGH COUNCILS

SUMNER A meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson), and Councillors W. H. Harris, A. Holden, D. F. Oldridge, J. E. Tait, H. L. Wiggins, C. Hr.rt, G. F. Allen, and H. E. Kennett. The engineer reported that the re-cently-formed paths on the east end of Bury street had received the first coat of tar and screenings, together with the path on the Main road between Muig'an's track and Clifton terrace intersection. The redressing of the Sumner-Lyttclton road had been commenced. Ploughing had been commenced at the Woolston water works reserve, and the ground would be worked when convenient. The work of forming the protective filling behind the sea wall from Euston street to the Beach Tea Rooms was progressing steadily, and fair progress was being made. The bulk of the surplus soil from Campbell street was being removed and dumped in the low-lying places in Whitfield street near the outfall drain. Fifty yards pf scoria had been carted £om Wakefield avenue, and spread. Rock was still being quarried at the "Cutting," and carted and dumped over the bank on the Sumner side Of the Sailing Club's shed. The scoria was being carted to Estuary road and Celia street. Two extra horses and drays from Sumner were now being used carting the spoil from the Main road at the "Cutting" where the City Council U5 men were employed, and carting and dumping it behind the wall on the west end of Estuary road. At Scarborough the overhanging rocks were being blasted, and carted to the esplanade for the wall; the larger rocks were being used to repair the breakwater. Road widening on the Tavlor's Mistake road was still being carried on. the spoil being used for filling the outside of the road. The rock was being used for building the stone wall. The main outfall drain had been cleaned from Colenso street. The regrading of Celia street had been commenced, and the sanct removed from the sides, which were being made up with scoria. The engineer's report was adopted. A deputation, consisting of representatives of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, the Women s Auxiliary of the Returned Soldiers Association, waited on the council with sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers Assocition, waited on the council with a request to be~permitted to hold a , ,r it on Easter Saturday and Monday •%_ „ raise funds for the Sumner-Red-cliffs sub-branch. The council agreocl to grant the request providing a suitable location would be acceptable to the association. It was decided that Cr. Wiggins should represent the council at the meeting of delegates of local bodies lo be held in March to confer about meeting the offer of the Carnegie Institute and the funds of the Christchurch museum. At the request of the Baptist Young Women's Bible Class Union it. was decided to allow it the use of St. Leonard's square for games during their camp in Sumner at Easter time. The Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson, and the town clerk, Mr F. J. Menzies, were appointed to represent the council at the Municipal Conference to be held in Wellington on March 14, and it was agreed that +hey should confer with Cr. Holden abftut the appointment of a representative if the Mayor should' be unable to go.

NEW BRIGHTON j The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver), Crs. W. E. Wilkins, A. E. Lawry, J. Orsborn, J. S. Ainsworth. W. L. A. Taylor, J. K. Worrall, T. E. Thomson, W. Hulmc, j and R. E. Holloway. The New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade was granted £2 2s towards sending a delegate to the United Fire Brigades' conference at Hamilton on March 5. The Mayor and town clerk were appointed the council's delegates to the annual conference of the Municipal Association at Wellington on March 14. The South Brighton Progress League wrote asking the council to complete the formation of the sod wall on the estuary across to the concrete wall and to provide a ramp on either side for traffic. It also objected to the council leasing any portion of the domain in New Brighton for grazing purposes. The first part of the letter was referred to the chairman of works for a report. The Canterbury University College Council wrote stating that it was pro--1 posed to convene a conference of local bodies within a radius of 10 ■ miles of Christchurch to discuss making! some contribution towards the funds of the Canterbury Museum. The Mayor was appointed to attend. Mr E. F. C. Hinds's application for the grazing rights of portion of the south reserve running south from the tennis court to the estuary, was refused. It was agreed that the futuie policy of the council would be to grant no more leases of its reserves for grazing purposes. The official opening of the Pleasant Point band rotunda was left lo the Mayor to arrange with the South Brighton Progress League and the New Brighton Municipal Band. Cr?. Lawry, Thomson. Ainsworth, and Worrall (convener) were appointed as a sub-committee to consider the development of the natural attractions of New Brighton. The establishment of a camping ground for the borough and a promenade along the Esplanade between North and Central Brighton, were referred to this sub-committee. It was decided to call for tenders for the reconstruction of the side channels in Beatty street. Correspondence and advertising pamphlets were received from the Mayor of New Brighton and Wallasey. England. It was decided to write thanking him for his courtesy. February 28 was declared the boroeigh holiday.
