NEW SUCTION DREDGE
TRIAL IN WAIMAKARIKI RIVER The new suction dredge, designed and built by Mr H. W. Harris for the Waimakariri Harbour Board, was given a trial at the junction of the north branch of the Waimakariri river and the outflow from Stewart's Gully, where a shoal repeatedly forms with the meeting of the two streams.
The dredge has been assembled with a view to economy in cost and working, and comprises a 24ft x 12ft pontoon on which are mounted a 4in Tangey suction pump and a 4in Thompson jet pump, which are driven by two petrol engines of 40 horse power. The plant is capable of moving an average of 20 cubic yards an hour.
At the demonstration the dredge was pumping and discharging 30ft to 40ft away on the bank, and the percentage of solids deposited was of a high average. Starting with the suctionin about two leet of water a depth of lift was shown in a verv few minutes.
Members of Iho Waimakariri Harbour Board witii Mr Harris, attended he trial, fliey expressed pleasure at the successful working of the dredge It is expected that it will considerably improve the navigation of the river.
