BEACH PATROLS
SURF CLUB MEMBERS TO ACT The patrolmen who have guarded Sumner, New Brighton, and North Beach bathers during the school holidays have now been withdrawn, surf club members having undertaken to do patrol work each week-end. A member of the Surf Association said yesterday that the patrolmen could not be kept on any longer, although lhe association would have liked the work continued until the end of the present month. Difficulty had been experienced in financing what had been done, and if it had not been for the efforts of the clubs the beaches would not have been patrolled for the whole of the school holidays. The public did not support the patrol work, a member of the Sumner Surf and Life-Saving Club said. A grant of £SO was received from the Christchurch City Council for the Sumner and New Brighton beaches, but part of that was given to North Beach. Sumner had received small donations lrom the Sumner Borough Council and the Heathcote County Council, but practically nothing from the public.
