NORTH CANTERBURY
RANGIORA Extreme regret was expressed by many residents at the report of the death, at Christchurch, of Mrs F. W. Garland, which took place on Friday evening. Up to two years ago, Mr Garland was in charge of the Rangiora School. During her stay in Rangiora, of about five years, Mrs Garland made many friends. Among the many telegrams of sympathy sent to Mr Garland was one from the Rangiora School Committee and the Mayor (Mr W. A. Rowse).
The Rangiora Bowling green presented a busy appearance on Saturday afternoon, when for the first time this season all the rinks were occupied. Of the active members only three were not present. Two of these were farmers, who were engaged in gathering their harvest. There is a mild epidemic of measles among the children in the township, and there was some question whether the school would reassemble tomorrow Following a consultation with the district health officer, it has been arranged to open the school tomorrow. . , Fifteen applications were received for the position of commercial teacher and secretary to the principal of the Rangiora High School, and at a meeting of the board op Friday evening Miss E. R. Smith, of Christchurch. was appointed. The nineteenth annual general meeting of the North Canterbury Gun Club was held on Saturday evening, Mr G. A Bruere presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet (already published) was adopted. Several members expressed satisfaction at the favourable report presented after passing through the most trving year in the history of the club, and every confidence was expressed for the future. Several members referred to the loss suffered by the club in the death during the year of Messrs J. Skilling (president) and G. Berington. Reference was also made to the long illness of Mr J. Fitzgibbon, a vice-president of the club, and a motion was carried expressing sympathy and a hope that he would again at an early date be actively associated with the club's affairs He was also elected a life member of the club Reference was also made to the great interest taken by Mrs J. Skilling in the social side of the club's affairs, and it was decided to convey to her the thanks of the club. The secretarytreasurer was also thanked for his services and he was voted an honorarium of £25. Officers were elected as follows:—Patron, Mr W. A. Rowse; president Mr G. A. Bruere; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Jackson, J. Fitzgibbon J. McClure, A. Prestney, F. Truscott, I. J. Watkins, F. Britling, and A. A Turner; referee, Mr A. Prestney; handicappers, the president and Mr I- G. Watkins; committee, Messrs E. Hubbard C. James, L. Kerr, O. Milnes, E. Milncs, E. Wheeler, W. C. Prosser. J. A. Mackenzie, and R. S. Smith; auditor Mi C I. Jennings. The president, and secretary, and Messrs Prestney and Watkins were appointed to represent the club at a meeting of delegates to arrange a programme of dates.
KAIAPOI The scow Ngahau arrived at Kaiapoi from Akaroa on Saturday evening with a cargo of 496 lambs. She left again yesterday morning for Lyttclton. KAIKOURA In the tost round of the pairs tourney among members of the local bowling club, the results were as fol-\oss-—S T. Harris and E. Firkin (14) lost to A. W. Ball and J. AKAROA At a meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council there were present: The Mayor (Mr F . R. E. Davis), Crs. R. Bruce, W. J. Hoffman, W. Pool, D. J. Narbey, and L. JVangioni. The Akaroa Power Boat and Sailing Club was granted permission to build a slipway near Daly's wharf, and was allowed the use of a portion of the section on which the council chambers stand adjacent to the wharf. It was decided to send two delegates to the conference of the Canterbury Roadside Beautifying Association on March 7. The councils! solicitors forwarded the titles and purchase money for the closed portion of Selwyn street. The Mayor and Cr. Bruce reported on the conference with the members of the Main Highways Board at Duvauchelle recently, and it v/as decided to hold over an application until the next meeting. It was decided to request the Defence Department to make enquiry regarding the facilities of the harbour as a naval and aeroplane base. It was decided to take action to convert the councils loans. Accounts amounting to tdbl 9s lOd were passed for payment. The results of the handicap singles and doubles played by members of the Croquet Club were as follows—Singles: First round—Mrs W. B. HALSWELL The social held under the supervision of the hall committee was again well attended. The proceeds will be devoted to the committee's improvement funds. Competitions during the evening were won by Mcsdames Kelly, J. Savage, and W. McLaughlin and Messrs Rodgers, Robinson and W. Hayes. A Monte Carlo one-step was won by Mr R. Walter and Miss D. Savage. Mr J. Rodgers and Miss Strong were the winners of a luckyspot waltz. Music was supplied by F. Smith's orchestra. Extras were played by Miss D. Rodgers. Mr N. Gardiner was master of ceremonies.
ISLINGTON The social evening held at the Islington Hall on Saturday by the Hornby (School Committee proved very popular, more than 80 persons being present. Winners of the competitions were Miss Marjorie Morrison, Mr Somerfield, Mr G. Stewart, and Mr F. E. O'Flynn HORNBY A meeting of the committee of the Hornby branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Orange Hall. Mrs W. Huffadine was in the chair. Further arrangements were completed for the "Back to Childhood" carnival dance. Messrs H. Wilson and B. Keene were appointed masters of ceremonies. A motion of thanks was passed to Mr J. Gunderson for printing posters advertising the dance, and to Mr Thomas for carting free of charge the nurses' equipment from the Parish Hall to the Orange Hall. Advice was received that Nurse Home was taking her annual holidays, and was being relieved by a temporary nurse. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Thomas and Roberts, hostesses for the afternoon. Medames Marsden and Gunderson were appointed hostesses for the next meeting. . Miss L. Hepburn, who has been visiting her parents at Hornby, has left to reside in Napier. Mrs R. J. Roberts and family have returned from a holiday spent in New Brighton. Miss Lucy Darling has returned home after spending the school holidays as the guest of Mr and Mrs L. Hamilton (Main South road, Hornby).
