SHIP TRAPPED IN ICE

A wireless S.O.S. revealed that th : Soviet ice-breaker Cheluskin is now near Wrangel Island, having drifted the unprecedented distance of 1250 miles since she was first imprisoned in the icc three months ago. Aeroplanes are being sent in the •hope of rescuing the crew and passengers. Hutments have been built and stores for 60 persons for eight months accumulated at Providence Bay on the Chukotsk Peninsula. I Members of the crew and passengers on the Cheluskin total 92, including several women and a party of scientists who had spent the winter on Wrangel Island, and were taken off by the Cheluskin in a smali aeroplane. It was reported on December 2 that a change of wind had freed the ship, but next day she was trapped again. It. was stated that Hie ship had insufficient stores to last those aboard until spring.]
