BIBLE MANUSCRIPT IN ENGLAND
CODEX ON VIEW MANY CONTRIBUTIONS FOR PURCHASE FUND (Received December 28, 10.0 p.m.) LONDON, December 27. The Codex Sinaiticus, the fourth century manuscript Bible which has been bought from Russia, was brought to England at the weekend by a courier. Many substantial donations have been received in anticipation of the opening of a fund for the purchase of the manuscript. They include £SOO from a society known as the Friends of National Libraries. Lord Wakefield sent a cheque for £IOOO. The Codex, within a red and gold enamelled box, arrived at the museum this morning, wrapped in brown paper and cotton wool. Dr. A. F. Bell, keeper of manuscripts, spent two hours testing the authenticity of the manuscript, after which it was installed in the entrance hall, where a queue quickly formed, 3500 inspecting the Codex. Eighty per cent, of the visitors -.laced contributions, sometimes a treasury note, in a box placed nearby. The visitors were amazed at the wonderful preservation and clearness of the manuscript.
