SETTLEMENT FOR VETERANS
* PHOGRESS OF SCHEME Work on the cottage settlement scheme of Ihe Christchureh Returned Soldiers' Association is at present confined to the preparation of the ground, and it is likely to be some months before this is completed, according lo a statement made yesterday by Mr J. W. Beanland, who is chairman of the committees controlling the scheme. In the meantime the association is proceeding with its endeavours to pro- j cure the money needed for the es- I tablishment of the settlement. i Mr Beanland said that at present 1 the work being done was still conlined to grading the front portion of the property, facing Page's road. The cottage at present on the land would have to be shifted, probably in February or March, and then the frontage would be clear. The levelling of the whole 17 acres, he thought, might not be completed before the end of six months. Consequently the actual building of the cottages and other work concerned in the material establishment of the scheme was not likely to be undertaken for some little time. The association might start building for part of the scheme before it was possible to undertake the whole, but everything depended on the receipt of the necessary financial aid.
