Mr Martin Macale, of Methven, a member of the electoral committee of the Wheat Purchase Board, is spending a holiday in Southland. Commissioner John Cunningham, of the Salvation Army, who recently made a tour of the South Island, is now in Auckland. Messrs H. E. Taylor, R. Washer (Wellington), F. J. Cook, R. H. Simons (Dunedin), and S. W. Hassall (Torquay, England) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Guests registered at the New City Hotel include Messrs G. M. Montgomery, C. Young, A. J. Bryson (Wellington), and J. J. Heasley (Timaru). Messrs T. Fukukura and S. Kawamure, Japanese business men, who intend to study New Zealand wool production methods during a short stay in the Dominion, have arrived at Auckland by the Monowai. Viscount Long, who was recently appointed temporary aide-de-camp to his Excellency the GovernorGeneral, arrived at Wellington by the M.aunganui from Sydney on Monday. He was accompanied by Viscountess Long. Mr Kenneth B. Myers, of Auckland, a son of the late Sir Arthur Myers, has been appointed to the board of directors of the South British Insurance Company, Ltd., in place of the late Mr A. B. Roberton. Mr F. W. Doidge, formerly an Auckland journalist, has been appointed manager of Lane Publications, Ltd., publishers of the London "Daily Express" books. He will combine that position with the honorary secretaryship of Lord Beaverbrook's Empire Crusade, which is now resuming activities. On the occasion of his retirement recently Mr James Hislop, headmaster of the Napier Central School, was the guest of honour at a number of functions, when eulogistic reference was made to his 42 years' service as a headmaster. Several jjresentations were made on behalf of the scholars, old pupils, _ the teachers, and the school committee. After holding the position of headmaster of the Invercargill North School for the last 114 years, Mr James Soar will retire from that position on superannuation at the end of February. Mr Soar has had a long and varied career, having spent 50 years as a school teacher. He has acted as headmaster of various Southland schools since 1902. The statement of the Rhodes .Trust for the academic year 1932-33 contains mention of several New Zealand Rhodes scholars, who have won academic and athletic distinctions. The successful scholars are J. S. Watt, doctor of philosophy in physics; P. C. Minns, second-class final honours in philosophy, politics, and economics, and J. C. Dakin, diploma in anthropology. Minns represented Oxford at Rugby, and J. E. Lovelock and J. S. Watt, at athletics. Special mention is ciade of Lovelock's performance in creaking the world's mile record. The Rev. G. R. Gibb, a son of the Rev. Dr. Gibo, formerly of Knox Presbyterian Church, Parnell, and latterly stationed at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, has been inducted to the charge of St. Columba's Church, St. Leonards-on-Sea. Mr Gibb was born in Dunedin, and was educated at the Otago Boys' High School, and at Victoria University College. His first charge was Queenstown, whence he moved to Nelson, and finally to Parnell. He had been in the Lancaster charge for the last three years. The Rt. Hon. W. A. Watt, a former Premier of Victoria, and also at one time Acting-Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, arrived by the Monowai at Auckland this week. Mr Watt, who is accompanied by the Hon. J. A. Boyd, is on holiday and will visit New Zealand's scenic resorts, after which he will return to Australia by the Monowai on January 12. Mr Watt had a strenuo'ns career in Australian public life from 1897 to 1929, and retired in the latter year to devote himself to private business affairs. He entered the Victorian Parliament in 1897 as Nationalist member for Melbourne East. He became PostmasterGeneral in 189l>, State Treasurer in 1909, and was Premier from 1912 to 1914. In 1914 he entered the Federal Parliament as member for Balaclava and held the portfolio of Works and Railways. For a period he was Federal Treasurer and, in 1913-19, while Mr W. M. Hughes was in Europe, acted as Commonwealth Prime Minister. From 1923 to 1926 lie was Speaker of the House of Representatives.
