CONDITIONS ON PUBLIC WORKS
PROTEST TO MINISTER (TEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAH.) WTLLINGTON, November 22. A protest against the conditions on Public Works job was made to the Hon. J. Bitchener, Minister for Public Works, to-day, by a deputation from the New Zealand Workers' Union, with whom several Labour members of Parliament were associated. It was stated that the men could not live on the present wage of 10s a day, which, after various deductions had been made averaged about 8s 6d a day for a five-day week. It was urged that the minimum rate be raised to 12s 6d. Other requests were that payment be made fortnightly instead o£ monthly; that agreements between the department and the men be renewed; that the Public Works employees be given quarter railway fares to enable them to visit their homes at Christmas; that all piece rates be increased by 3d a yard; that each man have a tent to himself; that work be found for all men who were engaged on the Tawa Flat railway deviation. The Minister replied that he had honestly endeavoured to improve the men's position. He would place the matters raised before the Cabinet.
