WORLD SHAKING

* English Seismologist's Report GREAT EARTHQUAKES IN NEAR EAST (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —BT ELECTRIC TELXGBAPH —COPXHIGHT.) (Received November 21, 9.40 p.m.) LONDON, November 21. Mr Shaw, the West Bromwich seismologist, announced early this morning: "A great earthquake occurred at 23.28 o'clock, probably in the Near East. The largest waves were recorded at 23.45. The record is not yet finished. The whole world is shaking at the present moment." The "Daily Mail" says that the motion on Mr Shaw's instruments was 10 inches, whereas a movement of a quarter of an inch is the normal indication of a considerable disturbance. The newspaper suggests that telegraphs and telephones may be affected in the area, and are probably completely out of action, this accounting for the absence of news. It is believed that the centre of the disturbance is the Black Sea or the Caspian Sea.
