DARFIELI) The second annual gala in aid of the funds for the combined sports grounds was held in the Memorial Hall. A fine display of hand-made garments, sewing, and useful articles (the work of the women's committee | during the winter months) was a j feature. Brisk business was done at [ the attractively decorated stalls. In addition to the stalls there were many competitions and games. Prizes were won by Mr and Mrs W. T. Cooke, Mrs G. Cullen (Riccarton), Miss D. Robinson, Mrs H. Barker, Miss H. M. Grant (Christchurch;, Mrs J. Robb, Miss J. Painter, Mr R. S. Williams, Mrs C. E. Anderson, Mrs L. B. Hewitt, Mr R. Barrett, Miss O. Hennessy, Miss N. Rae, Mr S. Syme, Mr F. J. Narby, Mrs C. E. Reid, Miss D. M. Cullen, Mr G. Cridge, Mr R. H. Bedford, and Mr C. O. Redfcrn. A dance, organised by members of the sports' clubs, was very popular, there being a large attendance. The music was supplied by Messrs S. Syme, F. A. Balthrop, and A. Hart. Mr A. Rutledge acted as master of ceremonies, and Miss H. Cullen and a band of helpers were responsible for the supper arrangements. The president (Mr J. R. Cullen) thanked all workers .and supporters of the gala, and mentioned that the gross takings for the day exceeded £IOO The annual meeting of the Darficld branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union was held in the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Theo Paterson presiding. The report snowed a very satisfactory position, and the balance-sheet revealed a substantial credit, which was voted to the budget fund. The hostesses were Mrs G - s - Donald and Mrs J. S. Hutton. i-ull advantage has been taken of the greater scope offered in talkie proauctions in "The Flag Lieutenant," which will be screened at the Malvern talkies to-morrow. It introduces scenes of a native insurrection in a British settlement, and the acts of heroism by which a serious catastrophe is averted. Scenes of festivity aboard a warship play a prominent part in the development of the story, and special music was written for these sequences. Naval authorities have co-operated, and full use has been made of the opportunities for sea spectacle offered by the subject.

OURUHIA Parents of children attending the local Sunday school, and also many friends and well-wishers, were entertained in the Ouruhia school, to a delightful social evening. Mr Dalley, superintendent of the Sunday School' . was in charge of the programme. He was assisted by Mrs H. A. Dawber, assistant teacher, and organist for the f Sunday services, and Miss J. Dunlop . of the Ouruhia School. The children 2 were entertained with games and ; amusing competitions. The children of i the day school sang school songs. A Highland reel was danced by Misses 1 Betty MacMillan, Dorothy Marsh r Eileen and Gladys McMillan. Master - Rodney Sharlick, of the infant school - gave a recitation. Parents of the children attending Sunday school pro- > vided a dainty supper. Master Billy > Cade, on behalf of the children, ex- - pressed thanks to Mrs Dawber and Mr L Dalley. ; Miss B. Clcland (Budrio Scttle- : ment), who has been on holiday at s Waltham, has returned to Ouruhia. ; HORNBY Mr H. D. Moran presided at a meetl ing of the committee of the Hornby I Amateur Swimming Club. The sub- _ committee set up to consider both improvements suggested several alterations, particular mention being made of additional dressing shed accommodation and recommending that a new structure be erected at the deep end of. the bath for the men, leaving the existing sheds entirely for the women members. The report also drew attention to the dangerous situation of the high divine; board and suggested that ( the spring-board be removed to a new , posilion io allow room for the high . board to be. placed in a more central position. It was decided to carry out the suggested alterations immediately. The opening of the season was arranged for November 25, and it was . decided to hold a carnival on that day. HORNBY-ISLINGTON At the weekly social held in the Islington Hall by the welfare committee winners of the competitions were Mrs R. Still, Mrs Ward, Mr A. Loach and Mr Duggan. . TEMPLETON A concert in aid of the Templeton school picnic fund was recently organised by Mr J. Laurenson (Christchurch) and given in the Oddfellows' Hall. The following contributed to the programme:—Misses Marjorie Leeson, Enid Robertson. Rene Agassiz, and Messrs Car] Morris. J. Darragh J Birch, and W. Bell. Mr R. J. Nicholson was accompanist. After the co> cent a dance was held, for which Mr J. Stewart and party provided the music. At a meeting of the Templeton Domain Committee it was decided to utilise the services of No. 5 scheme labour to erect a volley board in the domain for tennis players, two shelters on the western side of the domain, and a tool shed at the rear of the pavilionIt was decided to keep the main entrance gate locked at all times and to prohibit any motor traffic in the domain. PREBBLETON A pleasant evening, arranged by Mrs K. Hammond, in honour of Miss Bernadine Smith, on the eve of her marriage, was held in the Parish Hall at Prebbleton. Each guest brought a gift for the future home of the bride. Dancing find games were, held and amusing competitions were won bv Mrs J. Vcaiman and Miss Carmel Smith. Mrs T. Smith' and Miss Als Jones contributed songs, and Ivli Hammond and Misses. Jean and Poppy Hammond played for the games and dancing. Mr H. Marshall, who assisted Miss Smith in opening the numerous parcels, thanked all present for their gifts and their good wishes. Those present included Mr and Mrs H. W. Marshall, Mr and Mrs J. T. Easterbrook are also attending the conference. . COURTENAY An enjoyable concert was given by the pupils of the Courtcnay School, in aid of the school funds. ROLLESTON

The linal of a series of a weekly social and dance was held in the Rolleston Memorial Hall recently. During the season these functions have proved very successful and the proceeds have considerably augmented th<_ hall committee's funds. The competition winners were as follows:—Women: Mrs Thorpe I, Mrs Brosnahan 2; men: Mr B. McCrory h Mr H. Davis 2. Dance music was supplied by the BurgessSerra band. Extras were given by Miss Locker and Messrs Clinton and Hooper. Messrs S. Cross and S. Dallard have oeen masters of ceremonies during the season.
