A strong, cold wind made matters unpleasant for training operations at Eiccar'ton yesterday. There was a 3arge amount of galloping by horses engaged at Washdyke on Saturday and at Trentham next week. The short Wo.' 7 grass track was in use, and with the prevailing dry conditions fast times were general. The figures usually recorded on this track are somewhat flattering, but they serve a useful purpose from a comparative viewpoint, as all horses are timed from the one angle at each distance post. The plough was also in use, but it is not likely to become popular with trainers until a soaking rain falls to consolidate its present loose and deep formation. On the Plough. Liege Lord ran six furlongs in lmin | 37 l-ssec, and Berate followed, in lmin 17sec, whiia Meprisant executed strong work over the same distance. in Great Order. Cricket Bat galloped seven furlongs in lmin 32sec, the last three in 39 3-ssec. He is at the top of his form just now. and should race well at Trentham. On the Grass. Rebel Song hit out freely in a useful task over six furlongs, taking lmin <!-ssec, the last three in 39 l-ssec. .'Cup Candidates. Rocket appeared to be finishing better than Heather Glow at the end of a mile in lmin 40 2-ssec, the last half an 50 2-ssec, and, the last five in lmin 2 2-ssec. Copyist reeled off live furlongs in lmin 2see, the first two in 23 3-ssec. Fast Time. Nightly revealed his present condition by galloping five furlongs in lmin O 2-ssec. the last three in 36 3-ssec. He will make his next appearance at Trentham. Improving. Fiat Lux and Bright Red raced abreast throughout a seven furlong task in lmin 29 l-ssec, the last three in B9sec. A Solid Gallop. Tout le Monde and Ramo had an interesting tussle over seven furlongs. The first half took 50 l-ssec, and the full journey lmin 28sec. Both finished well, with the honours slightly in favour of Tout le Monde. Useful Work. Monastic reeled\off five furlongs in 3min 3 l-ssec, trie last three in 38 l-ssec. His stable mate, Argentic, who has not been galloped for some weeks, was restricted to half-pace work only Shatter was held in restraint throughout a seven furlong gallop, taking lmin 32 l-sseq, St. Joan accompanying him over the last half. Sweet Agnes" pleased in a six furJong task, taking lmin 16,2-ssec, - the last three 38 3-ssec. Proscenium sprinted half a mile, well in 50 2-ssec, and' his stable mates, Night Flyer and Glandovey, traversed a mile in lmin .44 l-ssec, Glandovey, failed to stay on and, will not go to Washdyke. yVeet Coast Juvenile. Errantry and the two-year-old Master Reynard (Hunting Song—Bayonne) reeled off three, furlongs in 37 2-ssec. The youngster moved very attractively. • ' Promising: Maiden. Regal Star (Robespierre—Sweet Beauty) finished on terms with Water Polo at the end of five furlongs run in lmin 1 4-ssec, the last three in 36 3-ssec. Sam Smith covered the same ground in lmin 2 l-ssec, the last three in 38sec. to' No Hurry. The two-year-old filly Variant, by Limond from Motley, sprinted three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. She has recovered from her recent indisposition, but it is intended to give her an easy time for a few more weejts "and she will not race at Trentham. A Proved Stayer. Minerval, joined by Elude over th« last six furlongs, ran seven furlongs in lmin 29 3-ssec, the last three in 3£ 3,-ssec, the former finishing the better He has come to hand quicker thar, anticipated and should he race satis-

C. Davey has recently taken up two two-year-olds on behalf of Mr P. F. Campbell. One is a colt by Paper Money from Halina, dam or liest Friend and granddam of Compris, and the other is a brother to Davolp, by Pombal from imported Imprudence. The former was bred by Mr Campbell, who purchased Halina from the Elderslie stud, and the Pombal youngster was secured cheaply at the Trentham sales Both' are well grown, and show a lot of promise . " ' A Wise Polity.

-Polydora will not fulfil her engagement in the Timaru Cup on Saturday, as her trainer is of the opinion that she has had enough racing, m ait meantime, and will only require another, race to assist her New Zealand Cup preparation. This she Will get at the Banks Peninsula fixture on October 28.

Anticipated Success. The following commentary on Regal j Son published 8 after his welter suc?pqq at Tattersall's, now makes mteiestin^: reading:-'' Regal Son might now. g a good pick for the Epsom but fife distanee, but the way he came ?^Sr h^X 7 'aSnst Topical with his 8-5.

There is a payment of o sovsior the New Zealand Trotting Cup due oy noon on Wednesday of next week. Regal Voyage Returns. Regal Voyage, which started 13 times last leaso/ without having earned a place, may make her reappearance at Fhe Greymouth meetingM£.s ™onth. i She has not raced since February la.t, but her name appears among the entries for the approaching meeting.

A Comparison. At the Greymouth Trotting Clubs meeting, to be held this month, the 2min 44sec class mile and a quaitei event has drawn the following entries: Great Logan, Harold Logan, Red Shadow, Vvrackler Free Advice Su Guy, Lindbergh, and Regal Voyage, the New Zealand Cup horses in the division numbering six. At the Oamaru meeting to be held on Labour Day, the 2min 45sec class mile and a quarter race has attracted the following:—) Nelson's Victory, Indianapolis, John Noble. John Jinks, Colorado, Gold Tinge, Author Jinks, Wrackler, Belinda, Red Shadow, Terence Dillon, Sunny Morn, Satin King,. George Rey, and First Flight. Of these horses four are New Zealand Cup candidates, but in the Oamaru Handicap of two miles, to be decided earlier in the day, other Cup candidates engaged are Roi l'Or, Kingcraft, Harold Logan, and Satin King. Of the cup horses Harold Logan, Wrackler, and Red Shadow are engaged at both the Greymouth and Oamaru meetings. The total number of cup horses nominated for Labour Day meetings is 10, those not required to race being Royal Silk, Mountain Dell, Glenrossie, and Harold Thorpe. It was rather surprising that the name of Royal Silk did not appear among the Greymouth nominations, but like Mountain Dell arid Glenrossie he will probably be given his only outing'before the cup at the Wellington meeting. Small Field in Derby Trial.

'. Remaining in the Derby Trial, to b<? decided at the Oamaru meeting on Labour Day, are the following horses: War Buoy, Vanity Fair, Morello, Rare Key, and a filly by Cathedral Chimes from a Marvin Wilkes mare, the property of the president of the club, Mr M. J. Hannon. Rare Rey, who is trained at Takinini by F. J. Smith, has not yet raced, and he can be looked upon as an unlikely starter..

Events at Bangiora. - At the North Canterbury Racing Club's meeting to be held at Rangiora on Labour Day, the following; two. light harness events will be decided:—View Hill Handicap, .of one mile, and .a;hatf, 3min 45sec class, and the Ashley.Handicap of one mile and a quarter, 3mm 7sec class. Both events are worth 9 1 sovs, and are to be decided in harness. Nominations will close with .the Secretary at Rangiora to-day at 8 p.m. ©mimes Trotting; Club. The report of the Thames Trotting Club stated that the fotalisator figures for the two day's meeting showed an increase of £3OIO 10s with the profit on the meeting £115.. >Vith the depreciation written, off, the loss on the season's workings was £156. Warboat's Next. Warboat, who has filled second place at both of his recent races at Methven and New Brighton, is likely to do his next racing on the West Coast as he has been nominated for the Greymouth .Trotting Club's spring meeting. Team for North.

Tactless, Ngingongingo, and June Royal left last night in charge of J. a. Shaw to fulfil engagements at the Waikato and Auckland meetings. For the last few . days Ngingongingo has been lame, but the effects have been gradually wearing off since he was blistered, and.although he is not thoroughly sound again, he has gone north in the hopes that he will have recovered by the time the meeting comes around. He was worked at New Brighton yesterday morning and completed his work as well as could be expected in the circumstances.'Tactless proved by his showing in the mile and a quarter race at New Brighton last Saturday that he is in forward order for immediate racing, and he should do well on the northern trip. The thirJ member of the party has yet to face the starter, but she has at different times shown in her training work that she is possessed of the brilliance necessary for her to figure prominently in a maiden race.

WINOOKA IN AMERICA ARRANGING RACE WITH EQUIPOISE (uarreo vrius Assom-iioa—bt eleci'iuo i TELEGEAPn—OOPTBIOBT.) (Received October 10, 7.10.p.m.) NEW YORK, ..October ■ 9. Mr R. Naylor discussed the possible race between Winooka and Equipoise at Belmont Park on November 7, with Mr Whitney (owner of Equipoise) and Mr Harry Buck, secretary to the United Hunt Association to-day'. Mr Naylor informed the Australian.Press Association that. negotiations were nearing completion. The differences encountered were about the weights and distance. Mr Naylor favoured 7st 21b and not more than seven furlongs, while Mr Whitney preferred Bst 81b and one mile.' Mr Naylor said ho would agree to the heavier weights, but would insist upon his distance. A Laurel message states that the date of the Winooka race has been changed to October 20, "apparently because two bi(? stakes are scheduled.for Saturday. It is hoped, that Winooka's appearance will increase 'the ordinary light Friday attendance. Jamestown is apparently eliminated as a possible opponent. Winooka-in an impressive workout ran five furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssec.

WAIMATE R.C. .'MEETING'' OF' COMMITTEE At a meeting of the committee of the Waimate Racing Club there were present—The president (Mr G. A. McCulloch), Messrs J. Matheson, J. F. Cooney, M. Cooney, J. Dench, S. Dixon, J. Halliday, E.'B. Harrison, "T. Twomey, and H. Willetts.

The Canterbury District Committee advised that the club's liability for delegates' expenses to the Racing Conference this year was £1 12s 6d. The amount was passed for payment. The New Zealand Trotting Association notified that Mr G. Paul, of St. Albans, Christchuxxh, would be the handicapper for trotting events on the Waimate Club's programme. The secretary of the Racing Conference notified that • a levy of fourteen fifty-firsts per cent, on gross totalisator investments of each club for the 1932-33 season had been ordered for the expenses of the conference and stipendiary stewards and racecourse inspectors' fees. The amount due by the Waimate Club was £lB 7s 7d. The Oamaru Jockey Club wrote suggesting a conference of the 13 racing and trotting clubs between Methven and Waikouaiti to discuss matters of mutual interest, mentioning that recently Southland clubs had held the third such conference Svith apparently good results. It was resolved that a reply be sent advising that the committee favoured the suggestion, considering it would be beneficial provided all the clubs mentioned in the list took the necessary interest in the scheme. ' The Waimate Club would' be prepared to appoint representatives to attend such a conference. It was resolved that the executive officers be empowered to arrange for representatives to attend the suggested conference. The chairman reported that the trees at the boundary of the grounds near Cousins's corner were overhanging the rpad. and he was of opinion that they should be cut down.
