WAIMATE TO CHRISTCHURCH ROAD RACE" Great interest is being shown in the big cycling event, .the Waimate to Christchurch road race, which will be held next Saturday. Visiting riders are already in Christchurch, and the prospects of, a. record field for the'distance are assured. C„ Johnson, of Auckland, who is on the 30inin mark, arrived on Saturday, and covered the course this week. The handicaps, which were -published this week, have generally been well received, and already, several riders have been mentioned as likely winners. The scratch men's, chances of gaining championship honours are generally favoured, -although strong opposition may be expected from the 10-minute bunch, comprising A. N. Ralston, of Otago, C. J. Arnst, S. A. Jordan, and W. L. White, of Christchurch The chances of the 13min men, 1 - T. M. Lohrey, M. Briggs, v/innei- of the Waimate road race, L. G. Fleming, winner of the-Mount Egmont race, and G. Farmer cannot be despised. .-Last year's'^winner, A. ..E. (Dad) Porter, who won oR the 90mm mark, and .whose' time w?s 60min slower than the scratch men's, will start off 43min. „ . The race will start at the Waimate ■post office; the- first men being dispatched at 8.15 a.m. by the Mayor of Waimate, Mr George Dash. The race will finish at-the Show Grounds, Add--ington. where the grass course will .be circled once by the riders,, so that the public will get a good view of the final tussle for places. ... _ , . Whilst waiting for the riders to finish the public will be entertained with a thrilling motor gymkhana, staged by the motor section of the Christchurch Corsair Club. The programme includes spectacular motor-cycle events, finishing up with niotor-cycle polo, believed to be played for the first time in New Zealand.
