COMPETITION FROM JAPAN
EMPIRE SERVICE LEAGUE'S FEARS Expressing fears of trade competition in New. Zealand from Japan, Mrs E. A. Hotchkin, general secretary of the Empire/Service League, has written to the Hon. It. Masters, Minister for Industries and Commerce, asking for protection. Her letter stated that the league was an incorporated society with 60,000 members, and 200,000 supporters in New Zealand. She asked, on their behalf, that the Minister would take note of "the serious menace the Japanese invasion was becoming in New Zealand to a great number o£ New Zealand and British manufacturing trades." Immediate protection was desired. The league was carrying out the greatest "Buy British Goods" campaign ever known in New Zealand, and asked for assistance in its work. The Minister has replied that Mrs Hotchkin's representations would receive careful consideration. He appreciated the work the league was carrying out and expressed the hope that members would continue to spread the wise doctrine of "Buy British Goods."
